"I ask us all to honestly evaluate our performance in scripture study. It is a common
thing to have a few passages of scripture at our disposal, floating in our minds, as
it were, and thus to have the illusion that we know a great deal about the gospel. In
this sense, having a little know-ledge can be a problem indeed. I am convinced that
each of us, at some time in our lives, must discover the scriptures for ourselves
-and not just discover them once, but rediscover them again and again."("How Rare a
Possession - The Scriptures!" Ensign, Sept.)
\\\\\\\\o0o////////
"The Lord has warned us of famines, but the righteous will have listened and stored
at least a year's supply of survival food."
Spiritual Goal---Have family prayer at least once a day. Twice is better.
Provident Living Goal---Learn a new skill or read a book pertaining to your career.
Storage Goal (each per person): 50 cans of soup, stew or chili; 5 lbs. salt; 20 lbs.
fat, oil or shortening; aluminum foil, plastic wrap, storage bags, etc.; At least 5
gallons water--recommended is 14 gallons / person for 2 weeks
72 hour kit: 1 lb. dried fruit or trail mix (can use fruit leather); 1 pkg soda
crackers (4 per box); 1 pkg graham crackers (4 per box); 2 liters tomato or orange
juice (Note: these items should be rotated every 6 months)
ALSO make a goal to always have the fuel tanks on ALL vehicles at least half full.

Pumpkins!!!!
Halloween is over. But, the pumpkins are still here. If stored in a cool dry place,
an uncut pumpkin will last for a long time. Here are some recipes to help you use
them. Or you could use canned pumpkin. Have fun with them.
Pumpkin (Squash) Seeds
Rinse 1 cup seeds, removing fibers; sprinkle salt lightly over the bottom of a large
shallow glass-baking dish. Arrange moist seeds in a single layer on the salt. Cook
uncovered in a microwave for about 7 minutes on HIGH, or until the seeds are crisp to
the bite. Stir after each minute. Remove excess salt and serve.
Pumpkin Pancakes
2 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cups milk
4 eggs, slightly beaten
1 cup cooked pumpkin
4 tablespoons melted margarine
In a large bowl combine the flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Combine
milk, eggs, pumpkin, and melted margarine. Add milk mixture to the dry ingredients;
stir just until the dry ingredients are moistened.
Ladle about 1/3 cup batter onto a hot, lightly greased griddle for each pancake.
Turning once.
Fried Pumpkin Sticks
1 pound pumpkin
1/2 cup flour
5 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons light soy sauce
Pepper to taste
1 qt oil
Peel the pumpkin and discard seeds, soft pulp and strings. Cut into finger-size
sticks. Mix flour water, salt and soy sauce into a paste. Coat each pumpkin stick
with the paste.
Heat the oil to 350 degrees; deep fry coated sticks about 2 minutes or until
golden brown and float. Serve hot or cold with or without pepper.
Nutty Pumpkin Waffles
2 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 eggs, slightly beaten
1/4 cup milk
1/2 cup cooked pumpkin
1/2 cup chopped nuts
Mix well the flour, baking powder, pie spice and salt. Mix eggs, milk, oil and
pumpkin and add to the dry ingredients. Add nuts. Bake in preheated waffle baker.

Footprints With a Twist
Imagine you and the Lord Jesus are walking down the road together. For much of the
way, the Lord's footprints go along steadily, consistently, rarely varying the pace.
But your footprints are a disorganized stream of zigzags, starts, stops, turnarounds,
circles, departures and returns. For much of the way, it seems to go like this, but
gradually your footprints come more in line with the Lord's, soon paralleling His
consistently.
You and Jesus are walking as true friends! This seems perfect, but then an
interesting thing happens: Your footprints, that once etched the sand next to Jesus',
are now walking precisely in His Steps. Inside His larger footprints are your smaller
ones, safely you and Jesus are becoming one.
This goes on for many miles, but gradually you notice another change.
The footprints inside the large footprints seem to grow larger.
Eventually they disappear alto-gether. There is only one set of footprints; they
have become one. This goes on for a long time, but suddenly the second set of
footprints is back. This time it seems even worse! Zigzags all over the place.
Stops.... Starts... Deep gashes in the sand. A veritable mess of prints. You are
amazed and shocked. Your dream ends. Now you pray: "Lord, I under-stand the first
scene with zigzags and fits. I was a new Christian; I was just learning. But you
walk-ed on through the storm and help-ed me learn to walk with you." "That is
correct." And when the smaller footprints were inside of Yours, I was actually
learning to walk in Your steps; followed you very closely." "Very good. You have
understood everything so far." When the smaller footprints grew and filled in Yours,
I sup-pose that I was becoming like you in every way." "Precisely." So, Lord, was
there a regression or something? The footprints separated, and this time it was worse
than at first. There is a pause as the Lord answers with a smile in his voice. "You
didn't know? That‘s when we danced."
To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: A time to
weep, a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance. Ecclesiastics 3:1,4

Storing Your Storage
Have you checked the price of those plastic food storage buckets recently? They are
enough to curl your hair without a perm! But, there is a way to cut the cost almost
as drastically. Stop by your local bakery, restaurant or school cafeteria kitchen.
Many places will give you the buckets – after all, they have to get rid of them
somehow. Others will charge a small fee for them, but you can be sure that they will
be less than buying them new.
I would advise you take them home and clean them out with bleach and soap. (I let
mine soak for an hour or so before dumping and drying)
Caution: Do not use a soap bucket or other non-food bucket for food storage. This
does not mean you should pass up those non-food buckets. Non-food buckets are good
for storing toilet-paper, paper towels, bar soap, shampoo, and many other items that
you should have in your storage that are non-eatable.
For your water storage, other than purchased water containers, I have found the 2
liter soda bottles are sturdy and convenient to handle. It has been my experience
that milk jugs get brittle after about a year or so. Bleach jugs are fine to use for
water that will be used to do dishes or laundry, but do not use them for drinking
water. The bleach permeates the plastic and in turn leeches back out into the water,
often in a higher amount than is safe for consumption.
I save the #10 cans and use 3-lb. butter tub lids for tops (a perfect fit) and store
lentils and other dry items that I do not use in large quantities and can find on
sale at the local grocery store. If you plan on using the #10 can for a long span of
time you could run a strip of tape around the lid and can to make a seal – not air
tight, but does discourage small bugs and moisture.
Happy storage! *-)
Q & a
