The ABC List for June 2007
Welcome to the newest monthly edition of the ABC List. The ABC List
serves 649 professional communicators.
This newsletter is a forum for accredited communicators, but more
importantly, those communicators interested in learning more about
becoming accredited, the value of accreditation and the process to
attain accreditation. If you have a question, a topic for discussion or
something you’d like to see in the ABC List, e-mail onu-@iabc.com.
If your chapter is holding a workshop, fun shop, exam prep session, exam
date, pinning ceremony or the like, let me know and I’ll publicize your
event here in the ABC List.

*** Upcoming Accreditation Exam in San Diego
IABC San Diego will be holding an ABC exam on Saturday, 14 July 2007
from 8:30am – 1:30 pm. There is space to accommodate up to four more
candidates (first-come, first-served). For further information, please
contact Cathleen Wolf at: c-@communicatewrite.com.
*** Staying on Track with your Accreditation Schedule
Many candidates balance work and family aside from trying to obtain the
ABC designation. With the busyness of everyday life, candidates may miss
minor details when submitting the application, portfolio, and scheduling
the accreditation exam. Here are a few administrative tips that may help
you avoid delays and move along the accreditation process a lot
smoother.
Step 1- The application
1. When submitting the application please make sure to read the
“Statement by Candidate”, sign and date your application.
2. Make sure all payment information is correct – processing of
applications may be delayed due to incorrect credit card information.
3. If you fax your application, please send an e-mail to onu-@iabc.com
to notify the coordinator that you are sending your application via fax.
Step 2- The Portfolio
1. Submit your Ethics Quiz along with your portfolio. Your Ethics Quiz
must be received to consider your portfolio for grading.
2. Clearly mark in your portfolio where your first and second work
samples are so that graders can easily identify where they are located
in the portfolio.
3. If you are a Gold Quill winner and submitting only one work sample
for your portfolio, please include a cover letter indicating the title
of your Gold Quill winning entry and the category in which it received
an award.
4. If you are part of an Accreditation Completion Program (ACP), please
include a cover letter indicating which chapter’s ACP Program you belong
to.
Step 3 – The exam
1. If you schedule your exams prior to receiving notification that your
portfolio has been approved, you do so at your own risk.
2. When scheduling your exam, please contact the accreditation
coordinator 3-4 weeks prior to the exam date so that all the proper
materials can be sent to the lead proctor in a timely manner.
3. If you are retaking an exam, please submit all fees prior to your
exam date by contacting onu-@iabc.com to receive information on how
you may pay for your fee or you may bring your payment on the day of
your exam.
Most importantly please keep track of your due dates. Candidates have
one year to submit a portfolio from the date the notification is sent,
so please mark your calendars. For instance, if your application
approval notice is sent on 30 June 2007, you will have until 30 June
2008 to submit your portfolio. The same goes for the exam; candidates
have one year from the date the portfolio approval letter is sent to
take the exam. Again, please mark these important dates on your
calendars, palm pilots, organizers, etc. If you are aware that you will
be unable to submit your portfolio or take your exam by the deadline,
please contact Olivia Nucum, Accreditation and Recognition Coordinator,
at onu-@iabc.com regarding deadline extensions. Candidates whose
deadlines have lapsed will be asked to resubmit the accreditation fee.
Only when the accreditation fee has been received will the candidate be
eligible to continue with the process.
