successfully complete the four-hour written and half-hour oral exam. It
is designed to take the mystery (and much of the anxiety) out of the
process and will provide insights into preparing for the exam, as well
as managing your time (and your mind!) during testing.

When: Thursday, 4 October 2007
Hours: 8 - 9 a.m. PACIFIC DAYLIGHT TIME and 4 - 5 p.m. PACIFIC DAYLIGHT

*** “It was Worth the Work”: Sonja Banic, ABC

Having just completed the process of becoming an IABC accredited
communicator, I have not only honed my technical skills but opened the
door to a network that I can now tap into for advice and support.

I took advantage of the Accreditation College offered through the
Toronto Chapter, enlisted the support of a mentor, and worked through
the process with a co-worker. I found this support system really kept
me focused on my goal and helped me to the finish line.

As most communications professionals, I knew how to develop a
communication strategy, execute tactics, provide strategic advice to
clients, and coach staff but the accreditation process forced me to dig
deeper into the aspects of communication; to better understand business
needs and client goals first and then to develop a communication plan
that is truly strategic. Today, I can better demonstrate and explain the
value communications can bring to a corporation. It was definitely
worth the work.

I really would like to thank two Toronto Chapter ABCs in particular:
Brent Carey, ABC, former VP Accreditation & Standards, and Liz Leake,
ABC, my mentor; for keeping me motivated and providing on-going advice
and guidance throughout this process.
