something you’d like to see in the ABC List, e-mail onu-@iabc.com.

If your chapter is holding a workshop, fun shop, exam prep session, exam

*** “Accreditation: Worth the Effort”: Mary McMinn, ABC

Frankly, the accreditation process was more challenging than I initially
expected.

Part of that may be because our Chapter doesn’t offer reviews or classes
like some Chapters do to prepare members for the portfolio and exams. I
jumped in not knowing what to expect, based on going to one meeting.
Also, I have an MBA and am a good student, so I think my perception was
the accreditation process shouldn’t be too hard compared to that. But, I
was quickly humbled.

For my portfolio I sent in two of my projects that had won Silver
Quills, but still needed to add more information (measurement and
evaluation). I did not prepare for my initial oral and written exam (and
certainly was unprepared for the speed needed to finish the test within
the time limit), so I had to retake part of it, which I passed on the
second try.

Our profession has grown immensely in the past few years and my guess is
the accreditation process is broader and more complicated now than it
was years ago. You should be prepared to know new and emerging
technologies, philosophies and more. I’m happier now to have ABC by my
name, because I know it’s not a “flash in a pan” process and I respect
it more.
