The ABC List for February 2009

Welcome to the newest monthly edition of the ABC List. The ABC List
serves 783 professional communicators.

This newsletter is a forum for accredited communicators, but more
importantly, offers information and resources for those communicators
interested in learning more about becoming accredited, the value of
accreditation and the process to obtain accreditation. If you have a
question, a topic for discussion or something you’d like to see in the

*** Upcoming Accreditation Teleseminar: “Preparing for Your
Accreditation Exam”

Join Jo Langham, ABC on 14 May 2009 for a teleseminar on “Preparing for
your Accreditation Exam.” It is designed for current accreditation
candidates and has value to those considering the accreditation process.


This session will provide you with an in-depth understanding of how to
prepare in order to successfully complete the four-hour written and

Becoming accredited isn’t just about the portfolios and exam. It’s about
a career lifestyle of connecting the dots and moving organizations to
the next level in their communication activities.

Gauge your readiness by following the Accreditation Process Supplement
form that outlines the core steps and necessary activities in the
accreditation process.

• You must fulfill the following general requirements:
     o Be a professional communicator with a minimum of five years
experience and a bachelor’s degree.
     o Have two work plans, with supporting documents that showcase your
ability to plan, direct and implement a broad range of communication
disciplines.
• Conduct a personal competency audit available at:
www.iabc.com/leaders/abctoolkit/#competency to benchmark your
communication skills.
• Assess your resource and commitment level.

• Submit application with updated résumé to support detail.
• Take the ethics assessment upon candidacy acceptance.

Portfolio Development and Submission:

• Gather data and supporting documents for two communication projects
done in the last five years.
• Develop a work plan for the two communication projects.
• Submit portfolio of the work plans/supporting documents for peer
review.

• Take a four hour written test on communication philosophy, technical
skills and strategic communication planning.
• Participate in 30 minute oral exam.

Advocate and Lead: www.iabc.com/abc/volunteerinfo.htm
• Advocate the use of strategic communication planning in organizations
to align communication activities with organizational goals and
objectives.
• Lead and advance the body of knowledge on communication best
practices.
