Klaus, Biden discuss new U.S. missile defence project

Washington: Czech President Vaclav Klaus yesterday met U.S. Vice-President =
Joe Biden in the White House and they mostly discussed the U.S. plan for a =
new missile defence architecture, Martin Erva, who accompanies Klaus during=
his visit to the United States, told CTK.
Erva said Biden and Klaus also talked about the situation in Afghanistan an=
d Iran.
Klaus said the United States knows that it is necessary to continue with th=
e anti-missile project in Europe.
He said his talk with Biden was friendly.
Biden visited the Czech Republic in late October to explain the decision of=
Barack Obama=B4s administration to scrap the plans for a U.S. radar base n=
ear Prague and a silo with interceptor missiles in Poland. He also paid a v=
isit to Poland.
The new architecture envisions the inclusion of the U.S. anti-missile shiel=
d into NATO's system and is mainly to aim against short-range and medium-ra=
nge missiles.
The Czechs are to start discussing their possible participation in the new =
system with U.S. representatives this month.

On Friday, Klaus will take part in a conference in Simi Valley, California =
on the role of former U.S. president Ronald Reagan in the fall of the Berli=
n Wall as a symbol of the crush of the communist system in the former Sovie=
