Karl, I don't understand why you must uprezz yor video to HD, unless you
are being asked to make an HD DVD, a tricky undertaking since no standard
has emerged yet as the clear winner (I'd choose Sony's Blueray but I'm
still waiting and seeing). But, besides the standard and the CODEC, going
to HD means cropping the image to 16/9, a difficcult call for archival
footage.

Regarding the file format, I would choose Blackmagic's 10 bit uncompressed
as the most flexible CODEC, either in Quicktime or AVI. You can download it
from here:
http://www.blackmagic-design.com/site/techsupport.htm

You don't need special hardware to run it (as long as you have enough HDD
datarate) and it is the CODEC of choice for many excelent cards (AJA, Kona
and theyr own Decklinks etc). For archival purposes you might prefer to
transfer the file to either DVD-RAM or DVD+RW as they have a longer life
expectation than DVD-R because they don't use organic dyes.
Hope this helps

Digi Beta archiving

Subject: Digi Beta archiving

I recently got a digital beta tape with 10:00 of important historical
footage of the Marine Band. What is my best option for archiving this
tape. I am planning to create a DVD accession copy, which will involve
spinning the tape to HD. Is there a file format I should transfer to at
the same time, perhaps with an eye towards archiving to optical disc?
One wrinkle is that we do not have the capability of digital beta
playback, will have the transfer done by a local studio, but may want to
have access to an archival source in the future without having to
arrange another transfer of the digi beta.

Thanks much,

Karl Jackson
