MORE EVENTS

Craft Fair Accokeek VFD October 23, 2004 8AM-3PM. 301-283-4456

"COLONIAL DAY" AT THE NATIONAL COLONIAL FARM; COME EXPERIENCE 18TH
CENTURY LIFE OF A MIDDLE CLASS FARMING FAMILY.
What were the necessary tasks and chores on a
tobacco farm in 1775? How did the typical
colonists prepare for winter? What processes and
tools were used to make the objects needed in
that society?
Learn the answer to all of these questions and more on Saturday, October
16th as you visit with our colonial renactors and demonstrators. Observe
onsite demonstrations of woodworking, blacksmithing, spinning, stripping
of tobacco, smoking of meat, stringing of vegetables and herbs, soap
making, candle making, broom making, baking, and laundering. Also enjoy
some colonial games, an 18th century magic show, and live folk music.
Rain or Shine. Admission: $2/ Adult and $.50 child
The National Colonial Farm is located in Piscataway Park, on the Potomac
River, directly across from Mount Vernon. This outdoor living history
museum was established by the Accokeek Foundation to educate the public
about life on a typical middle class tobacco farm in 1775. Guided tours
of the National Colonial Farm are available on the weekend and are lead
by skilled interpreters dressed in typical 18th century farm attire.
Visitors also explore various hiking trails, the native tree arboretum,
and the scenic Potomac River shoreline.
