AS BUSH URGES TEACHING CREATIONISM ALONG WITH EVOLUTION,
URGE YOUR STATE TO STICK TO REAL SCIENCE IN SCHOOLS
[From People for the American Way <http://www.pfaw.org>]
It may be hard to believe that we are still fighting to protect the
teaching of evolution eighty years after the infamous Scopes "monkey
trial." But it remains very much under threat. On 9 Aug 2005, the Kansas
Board of Education signed off on a new draft of science standards that
includes language from "intelligent design" advocates (i.e.,
creationism, God-centered "science"), giving hope to extremists across
the country.
Now they have the backing of the President of the United States. George
Bush recently advocated the teaching of so-called "intelligent design
theory" in public schools, something the National Academy of Sciences
has denounced as "creationism in disguise."
The fundamentalist right will try to use the President's influence to
pressure state leaders into surrendering public schools to their agenda.
Help head off this threat: Tell your state government that you want
science teachers teaching science, not religion.
