DEMOCRATIC OPPONENTS OF BUSH'S AUTHORITARIAN NOMINEE
TO SUPREME COURT HAVE LINED UP 37 VOTES OF 41 NEEDED

Senators Ted Kennedy and John Kerry are poised to launch a filibuster to
prevent a vote on confirming Joseph Alito as President Bush's second
Supreme Court appointment. By one Senator's count, they have lined up 37
of the 41 votes needed to oppose a motion to end debate -- in other
words, to filibuster.
Alito is an authoritarian whose judicial record and past writings show
unequivocally that he would support giving unprecedented imperial powers
to the presidency. With George Bush occupying the White House for the
next three years, it's a very dangerous time to give more power to a
chief executive who has already flaunted the law to launch an illegal
invasion under false pretenses, spy on domestic communications without
court approval, and tolerate abusive treatment of detainees while trying
to block their access to U.S. courts.
Another great concern is that Alito would provide the essential fifth
vote on the Court to severely restrict or eliminate women's reproductive
freedom, including abortion rights.
A filibuster would be risky. Republican leaders have threatened to
change the Senate rules to prevent filibusters of judicial nominees. But
with their leaders under indictment (Rep. Tom DeLay) and suspicion (the
Abramoff bribery scandal) and the White House's political position
collapsing, they may not have the political will or "capital" to make
the change.
Organizations opposed to Alito are urging us to push our Senators to
support the filibuster. Please take action right away.
