He writes in his diary: "Went out to Aix last night with ration
cart. Was an electric storm, and black as ink. Got run into by
another cart and threw off between the carts. Wasn't hurt any, only
brused. Had to walk and lead my mule, and just go when it lightning
or a signal light or rocket went up. But there was no M.G. or shell
fire. Brot back a load of M.G. ammunition and rubber boots."

He writes in a letter to his mother, "Well Ma, it's raining today
as usual, but one learns to like it after so long a while. We're
moving back to a rest camp, in a day or two now, and its rumored the
Marines won't see the trenches again. We have been in the trenches
close to 60 days. I've never been stationed in the trenches, but
drove to the front most every night. I've driven a team up between
the 1st and 2nd lines, several times, with rations, under cover of
darkness."
Later that night, 77th Company, including AR Appenheimer, are
relieved by the French and hike back into reserve at Camp Savoyard.

1918: At 7:00 a.m., Headquarters, Supply Train, 15th, 23rd, 77th and
81st Companies rendezvoused at Ancemont. The march to the new area
then began. Marched to Hieppes, arrived at 3 p.m., and billeted for
the night. Distance marched approximately 20 kilometers.
AR Appenheimer writes in his diary: "Leave camp at 3 o'clock a.m.
and hike till 12. Camp at Hieppes."

1918: At 8 a.m., May 15th, the battalion continued its march to the
new area, arriving and billeting in Hargeville at 4 p.m., for the
night. Distance marched approximately 20 kilometers.
AR Appenheimer writes in his diary: "Leave Heippes at 9 a.m. and
arrive at Hagerville 4:15 p.m."

1918: On May 16, the battalion continued its march to the new area,
leaving Hargeville at 8 a.m., arrived and billeted in
Venault-le-Chatel at 9:30 p.m. Distance marched approximately 40
kilometers.
AR Appenheimer writes in his diary: "Left at 7:45 a.m., stopped
for dinner at 12 at Revigny, and left at 2 p.m., and arrived at
Vanault le Chatel at 9:30 p.m. Made 44 kilometers."

I couldn't groom him, so run him thru a creek, then took a swim myself
an shaved and washed clothes. Feel like a new man."

1918: The battalion rested in Venault-le-Chatel until May 20th, when
the march to the new area was resumed, leaving Venault-le-Chatel at 9
a.m, and arriving at Vitry-le-Francois at noon. Headquarters, Supply
Train, 77th and 81st Companies entrained and left Vitry-le-Francois at
4:30 p.m., for Isle-Adam.
AR Appenheimer writes in his diary: "Broke camp at 7:30, arrived
Vitry of France 2:40. Left via R.R. at 6 o'clock.."

May 21
1918: Headquarters, Supply Train, 77th and 81st Companies arrived at
Isle-Adam at 7:30 a.m., May 21st. Immediately detrained and marched
to Marines and billeted for the night. The 15th and 23rd Companies
arrived and detrained at 9 a.m. and marched to Haravillers and
billeted for the night. Distance marched by Headquarters, Supply
Train, 77th and 81st Companies, approximately 25 kilometers, by the
15th and 23rd Companies approximately 22 kilometers.
AR Appenheimer writes in his diary: "Passed through Paris 5 a.m.
Arrive at Parmain Le Adam 6 a.m. Unload and left at 9.45. Arrived at
Marines at 8:45 (pm)".
Whereas, according to the History of the Sixth Machine Gun
Battalion, the teamsters of Headquarters Detachment marched to Marines
and billeted for the night, Appenheimer states clearly in his diary
that he did not billet in Marines at all, but kept marching straight
through the night, towards Beugrenier.
Appenheimer will describe this journey in a letter two days
later: "23 May: Well, Ma, didn't get this letter started till it was
too late to have it sent before we moved. Since I wrote it we've
hiked 3 days, rested 3, hiked 1, rode on the train 12 hours, and hiked
2..."
