Woodcocks, Fox Sparrows  Cooper/LaFontaine
 Mar 26, 2005 09:50 PST

Yesterday evening Dave and I went to the Brooks Estate (the "stump
dump") to watch the Woodcock display that Alan Ankers described. It
was brief but spectacular. From 6:20 to 6:40 there were at least 3
and probably 4 birds making their peenting sound and doing their
amazing courtship flights. At times we could watch two of them on the
ground at the same time. We saw one behavior we'd never witnessed
before - a bird on the ground walking around with its wings raised.

In case you don't know, the next couple weeks are your only chance to
see Fox Sparrows as they migrate through on their way to breed in
Canada. Yesterday I found one at Dunback Meadows, and this morning
Alan and I found another at Hayden Woods (off Valleyfield St. in
Lexington).
