Mystic lake this afternoon  eric smith

Kathy and I went over to the lower Mystic lake this
afternoon to see what could be found. The big shocker
was quite big. One full adult Bald Eagle flying over
the lake. It rode a thermal, circling up and up until
we couldn't see it any more.

I started out over by the medford boat house and
didn't see an eagle in The Tree (and no Osprey in the
cove either, but the time wasn't right.) Nothing was
that close, so I drove back down a few coves and
parked along the road. I had seen a few
merganser-like birds in the water on the way past. We
met Ruth Liddy just as we took out our gear, so we all
went around the point and found a nice batch of birds:

6 Male Common Mergansers + 4+ Females
1 Lonly male hooded merganser (never put its crest up
once.)
1 Male Red Brested Merganser (distant, but wonderful
light.) Liked to hang out with...
4 commerants (unknown type, I gotta get better at
IDing them.)
1 Bald Eagle
1 Nuthatch (sounded Red Breasted, but I didn't get a
good look to be sure.)

Like Paul Roberts, we got to watch a female Common
Merganser try to catch the eye of a male. But like in
his case, it was no dice. She did everything she
could, streatching out, floating in front of him....
But all for not. He seemed to notice and was doing
some head rasing/throw-backs in responce but never
took her up on the offer.

Kathy and I were going to head up to Sandy Beach, but
ran out of time. But I might slip up over the Charles
River, as I heard there was a pair of wood ducks by
the bridge. :)
