Leuren Moret, who has spoken in 44 countries addressing the dangers of DU writes: " The seriousness of this global issue must be addressed soon, and the use of DU stopped with an international moratorium (it is already illegal under international laws and war conventions, under US Federal Code, and US military law.) The future of humanity will be determined in this century - whether it survives or not. We can be no healthier than the health of the environment.
Our nation is being killed slowly by the radiation pollution from the nuclear weapons program, the
nuclear power program, and now the DU program to nuke the middle east and central asia and steal their oil. The four recent nuclear wars staged by the US (and Britain) in Iraq 1991, Yugoslavia 1995 + 1998 [Amoco was exploring for oil in Yugoslavia in the late 1980s and found it], and Afghanistan 2001 have made our troops "throw-away" soldiers. There is no possible way that they can escape exposure to DU serving in the regions now contaminated, and the civilian populations will daily inhale and ingest the contamination and levels will be even higher in them. And what is even worse, is that the soldiers bring the DU home in their semen, internally contaminating their
wives and partners, and causing horrific defects in the post-war babies."
Preventive Psychiatry E-Newsletter No. 169 in a letter written by Arthur N. Bernklau, executive director of Veterans for Constitutional Law in New York charged recently that the reason Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi stepped down earlier this month was the growing scandal surrounding the use of uranium munitions in the Iraq War. A special report published by eminent scientist Leuren Moret naming depleted uranium as the definitive cause of the Gulf War Syndrome' has fed a growing scandal about the continued use of uranium munitions by the US Military. "This malady (from uranium munitions), that thousands of our military have
suffered and died from, has finally been identified as the cause of this sickness, eliminating the guessing. The terrible truth is now being revealed."
He added, "Out of the 580,400 soldiers who served in the first Gulf War, of them, 11,000 are now dead! By the year 2000, there were 325,000 on Permanent Medical Disability. This astounding number of 'Disabled Vets' means that a decade later, 56% of those soldiers who served have some form of permanent medical problems! The disability rate for the wars of the last century was 5 percent; it was 10 percent, in Viet Nam."
Leuren continues, "Our energy choices have caused this nuclear nightmare. Nothing has had a greater negative impact on democracy in the United States than the secrecy of the nuclear weapons program. Nothing has had a greater negative impact on the health of the environment than
militarism.
When I became a whistleblower in 1991 at the Livermore Nuclear Weapons lab, Richard Berta, the Western Regional Inspector for the Department Of Energy told me "... the nuclear weapons labs exist for the Pentagon, and the Pentagon exists for the oil companies..."
Planet Earth is the one celestial body in this Universe which the great spirit has gifted with
life... and we are turning it into a death star.
There is no choice now but to speak out far and wide until this is stopped. And we can do it, by voting with our wallets, by making better energy choices in our homes and communities, and by stopping the apparatus that is destroying our lives, our health, our families... and our planet."
