Position Announcement
Title: Trails Restoration Specialist I
*
The Watsonville Wetlands Watch seeks qualified applicants for the
position of Trails
Restoration Specialist. The position is primarily responsible for
maintenance and
restoration on the City of Watsonville's wetland trail system but will
also assist with
other Watsonville Wetlands Watch restoration projects throughout the
Pajaro Valley.
*Organization*
Watsonville Wetlands Watch is a non-profit organization, whose mission
is to protect,
restore, and appreciate the wetlands of the Pajaro Valley. Wetlands
Watch operates the
Fitz Wetlands Educational Resource Center, an education and community
center located
at Pajaro Valley High School, where students, teachers and the community
have an
opportunity learn about the diverse natural communities of the Pajaro
Valley. Out of
this center, Wetlands Watch operates the Watsonville Wetlands
Restoration Project, a
community based restoration program working to restore wetland function
and wildlife
habitat on public and private lands.
*Program*
Watsonville Wetlands Watch's wetland restoration program conducts
environmental
restoration projects on public land in cooperation with such agencies as
the California
Department of Fish and Game, the City of Watsonville, and the Pajaro
Valley Unified
School District and on privately owned parcels in cooperation with local
landowners,
farmers, and homeowners associations. Native plants for restoration
projects are grown
at our nursery at the Fitz Wetlands Educational Resource Center and
local elementary
school greenhouses. All of our restoration projects integrate some
component of
volunteer and school group participation; moreover students and
volunteers serve an
important role in project implementation.
The Watsonville Wetlands Watch is contracted by the City of Watsonville
to continue
restoration and maintenance of the City's slough trail system, and
implement the City's
Watsonville Wetlands Trail System Vegetation Management and Maintenance
plan.
Position
This position will primarily focus on trail restoration and maintenance
on the City of
Watsonville's Watsonville Sloughs trail system. In addition to
maintenance and
restoration, the Trails Restoration Specialist will help implement the
Watsonville
Wetlands Trail System Vegetation Management and Maintenance plan. The
primary
roles of this position are to: maintain trail edges and entrances for
public access;
implement restoration projects along the urban trail system, and promote and
coordinate volunteer participation in the on-going maintenance and
restoration needs of
the trails system. An important element of this position's duties is to
work with various
community persons, students, and youth to inspire and foster greater
stewardship of the
Watsonville Slough System, through environmental restoration of the
sloughs and trails.
This field-based project also aims to control invasive plant species and
restore/revegetate
freshwater wetland and upland native habitat along the 6 miles of City
trails managed
under the City of Watsonville Department of Public Works and Utilities.
The position
includes mechanical, and manual invasive species control, pilot control
projects, and
ongoing native plant restoration and management. In addition to work on
the City of
Watsonville's Watsonville Sloughs trail system, this position will
assist with a variety of
other Watsonville Wetlands Watch restoration projects.
