Geodatabases for weed mapping

Hello Everybody,
There are now 59 of us on the CalWeedMapping listserv; that's a lot of
expertise. Don't forget that you can look at the list of members, read past
messages, and subscribe or unsuscribe, at
http://lists.topica.com/lists/CalWeedMapping.
I would like to get some feedback on a topic that is of interest to me, and
I think some others of you, from the discussion at the Cal-IPC Weed Mapping
Working Group in Oct. It is: GEODATABASES.
I have not yet delved into the world of geodatabases, but I can see that
there is great potential for more powerful querying and data management
across themes, such as weed occurrences and other components of habitat
surveys.
So my questions for the group, just to get things going (feel free to add
your own requests for info) are:
- Do any of you have a weed mapping geodatabase you are willing to share
with others? If so, what are the requirements (I don't have 9 installed
yet!)? I can put it up on our list of shared tools in the website, if you
approve. The USFWS has a very well-developed one for a lot of feature data
types, including weed occurrences. I will ask them if they will share it.
- Based on what I've seen, I wonder if it would be a good thing for people
like us to work on a data model that has a lot of the usual fields, domains,
data types, etc., all worked out. It seems we'll all be inventing the same
stuff over and over, and we theoretically should come up with the same good
practices (with some variations). What do people think of that- would it be
useful to have a generic weed geodatabase that can be used by anyone to get
their project going? it could become the basis for a cross-platform transfer
standard.
Thanks for your thoughts,
Deanne
