The next meeting of Colorado Women In Technology will be September 27 at
Dolan's in Boulder.
Patty and Dale Laushman, owners of The Uptime Group, will present:
When is Open Source Right for a Business?
We've all heard about the supposed benefits of Linux and open source
technology -- lower cost, more secure, more stable, less maintenance.
However, there is a great deal of misinformation about where Linux is
useful and where it is not. Some of it comes from companies that have a lot
to lose if Linux becomes a standard alternative. Some comes from
evangelists who say that Linux is a one-size-fits-all solution, which it is
not.
Open source software has made tremendous strides in the last three years,
but it is not yet the be-all, end-all technology solution some would have
us believe. Please join Dale and Patty Laushman of The Uptime Group as they
frankly discuss where open source software makes sense and where it
doesn't, based on years of experience implementing both traditional and
open source technology for businesses in the Denver area. You will walk
away with:
o Pros and cons of using Linux for Web services, application servers,
workstations, e-mail and databases
o Tools you need to determine if your company, or your client's company,
can benefit from implementing open source software
o Resources to go to for help with converting to open source technology
The Uptime Group is an IT consultancy that integrates the best of
traditional and open source technology to create the most cost-effective,
reliable and secure technology solutions for small- to medium-sized
businesses in the Denver area. By implementing open source software, where
it makes sense, they have saved their clients 30 to 50 percent compared to
the cost of all-traditional solutions.
