TRAINED AT THE SCHOOL OF THE AMERICAS, POSADA CARRILES
BLEW UP AIRLINER AND HAVANA HOTELS, PLOTTED CASTRO MURDER
[From International A.N.S.W.E.R. <http://www.internationalanswer.org>]
Luis Posada Carriles, whose crimes against Cuba include the bombing of a
civilian airliner that killed 73, a wave of attacks on hotels and other
tourist sites in Havana, and assassination plots against Fidel Castro
and other officials, is seeking asylum in the United States.
Posada, now 77, was trained in explosives and sabotage at the U.S.
government's notorious School of the Americas (now the Western
Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, WHINSEC) in preparation
for the U.S.-organized Bay of Pigs invasion. While working for the
Venezuelan national police (and, reportedly, for the CIA) in the early
1970s, he oversaw the killing of Venezuelan leftists. In 1976, he and
the notorious Orlando Bosch (now enjoying political asylum in Miami)
masterminded the in-flight bombing of a Cubana Airlines passenger plane,
which killed 73. He was also implicated in the 1976 Washington, D.C.,
car-bombing that killed Orlando Letelier, the former foreign minister of
Chile, and Ronnie Moffitt, his American aide.
In the 1980s Posada commanded the supply of munitions to the Nicaraguan
contras from the CIA's Ilopango airbase in El Salvador. In 1997 he
directed a wave of bombings of restaurants, hotels, and night clubs in
Havana, killing an Italian tourist.
In 2000 Panamanian authorities caught him with 33 pounds of C-4
explosives intended for assassinating Cuban President Fidel Castro at an
inter-American summit meeting. He was convicted and jailed for that
plot, but last year Panama's outgoing right-wing president Mireya
Moscoso pardoned and released him, reportedly at the behest of the Bush
administration. Still wanted in Venezuela (where he plotted the 1976
plane bombing) and in Cuba, he is believed to have hidden in Central
America for seven months, but in late March 2005 he managed to make his
way to Miami. Through lawyers there, he is now seeking political asylum.
If anyone meets the definition of a terrorist, Posada is the man, and it
is unconscionable that he be granted asylum by a U.S. government that
constantly proclaims its determination to root out terrorism. Tell
George Bush, your Senators, and your representative that Posada's asylum
petition should be denied and he should be extradited promptly to
Venezuela or Cuba.
