This photograph, which was taken back in May, shows the demolition progress
on the west wing of the K-25 uranium-enrichment plant in Oak Ridge.
The plan is to continue work around the U-shaped building, although
questions about the extent of technetium contamination could slow the demolition
schedule on the east wing. That situation is _very much under study_
(http://blogs.knoxnews.com/munger/2009/09/big_question_could_stall_k-25.html) at
the moment.
Work continues apace on the west wing, and I hope to get some updated
aerial photos of the site before long.
At the time of its construction during the World War II Manhattan Project,
K-25 was the largest building in the world under one roof. The gaseous
diffusion operation processed uranium hexafluoride in a gaseous form,
concentrating the U-235 for use in weapons and as nuclear reactor fuel.
