FW: Critical Mass in July and August

All:
I'm definitely on the side of laying off CM for the summer. I don't want it
to be a student only or even student-dominated event. With the right kind of
outreach it won't be. However, to build Critical Mass, you need critical
mass--lots of bodies.
But, I'll also ask the question: Is CM needed here. I was a bike commuter
in LA, Boston, and New York--all very bike-hostile places--where CM makes a
lot of sense. In such a bike friendly town as Davis, I'm not quite sure what
CM strategy should be. Certainly, there are improvements needed--putting a
bike lane on Fifth Street, for instance, and eliminating legal parking
spaces that block the bike lane. Celebrate the bike?--We have many great
bike paths in town. Hell, some of us just got $250 grants from the county
(to be used toward the purchase of new commuter bikes), which is trying to
get more folks out of their cars. As I've said before, perhaps a bike
advocacy group would be a better biker rights "vehicle" at this point.

Hello all,
I'm forwarding the following inquiry. Thoughts? I have heard suggestions to
postpone CM in Davis during the summer, until the students return. And I
have also heard counter-suggestions against turning Critical Mass into a
"student-only" event. I could go either way.
However, given that the last "Critical Mass" in Davis attracted a grand
total of three riders, if we proceed with a ride this month, we need to
invite friends, pass out flyers, and otherwise work to make it a success. I
created a flyer, which isn't month specific. Others are certainly free to
create their own or use mine or find one online to modify for Davis or
whatever.
Anyway, some thoughts? Again, please respond to daviscrit-@topica.com
to share your comments.
Happy Wednesday,
Pablo

Hi,
I am writing to ask if critical mass will ride again in July and
August. Can you get that information to me and cc mgcou-@jps.net so
that it
can go in the Sac Area Peace Action newsletter too.
Please include, when, where and a contact number/email
Thanks
