"ROME - Luciano Berio, considered Italy's foremost composer of the late
20th century and an enthusiastic explorer of electronic technology in
music, died Tuesday. He was 77. The cause of death was not immediately
available. Berio, chairman and superintendent of the National Academy
of St. Cecilia in Rome since September 2000, had recently undergone
tests for a spinal problem.
Berio conducted many of the major orchestras in Europe, the United
States, Israel and Japan. He was particularly noted for innovations in
electronic music and taught courses on the topic at Columbia University
in New York.
Born in a town on Italy's northwest Ligurian coast on October 24, 1925,
Berio grew up in a family of musicians, first studying music with his
father and grandfather. Along with violinist Yehudi Menuhin, he was
awarded a Wolf Prize for the arts in 1990. Among Berio's principal
musical works for theater were "Passaggio," and two compositions done in
collaboration with Italo Calvino, the late Italian author, "La Vera
Storia" and "Un re in ascolto"."
