Eric,
I can be reached at 819 777-7017. I would be interested in exploring some ideas regarding housing, container based or otherwise. I think there are ways of assembling flat pack housing sections that can take full advantage of mass production, without the burdensome size and transportataion issues associated with containers.

Hi Eric
Thanks. Am not an architect but my father (retired) is. I think I got fascinated by the little models he would bring home. Have stripped and renovated my 50’s modernist house in Ottawa (now being rented out as work in Kenya for the UN) My wife is a consultant for UN Habitat (ie housing) and certainly I don’t think the container option has even occurred to them; but due to security issues in low income areas the advantages of container are notable. Main drawback for that ‘market’ would be heat, due to being in the tropics. Will be in Ottawa but not till September; but if you give me your number can give you a call when you’re there and we can discuss some ideas. On the size issue for remote sites; yes for a 40’ unit, but have seen 20’ units in big trucks on abysmal roads all over developing countries

Eric,
I am just curious, do you have an Architecture background? I am an Architectural Technologist, but I do not work in my field. I have been in high tech here in Ottawa for years, but am now out of it. I have started my own company developing bicycle components.
I am interested in the areas where architecture and mechanical design overlap. Architects have had decades to adapt housing design to the immense opportunities afforded by industrialization. They have failed miserably. Houses are still built as they were more than a century ago, even so called 'Pre Fab' ones.
The shipping container concept has intrigued me for quite some time. I actually went out to a site nearby where rental shipping containers are accessible to examine. They sell used 40 foot high cubes for about $3500. I have enough land to put a few in the backyard. I considered buying one, but after carefully considering the pros and cons, I have pulled back a bit because of two fundamental issues.
The first concern is the portability issue. Containers require heavy equipment to move, load, and unload. This is unsuitable for rugged or remote sites.
The second concern is the narrowness of the eight foot width module. It is suitable for some spaces, but not for all, especially living and dining areas.
Wes Jones seems to have gotten around these constraints by limiting his locations to urban areas, and allowing for containers to have open faces. You can actually purchase containers with open sides, so serious modification is not required. When I have more time, I will reexamine the small module issue and see what measures can be taken to overcome it. I specialize in designing within tight envelope constraints, so the challenge is irresistable. The Wes Jones Architects site says they can outfit a container within their proprietary Pro/Con Container System for about $20,000 US. That is about $125 a square foot for a 20 foot unit. Canada you can build conventional 'stick' homes for about that price. I would have expected that all the advantages of modular architecture, coupled with 'factory'
interior assembly, would result in a much lower cost. Perhaps his prices are based on low volume production. I would be interested to see what costs can be reduced to with high volume manufacturing, and limiting designs to several base models.

Hi Eric
Also from Ottawa (though currently in Nairobi); are you able to tell me which shop?
Cheers

I found very detailed HO scale containers at a hobby shop here in Ottawa, in the model trains section. They would be very usefull in planning the logistics of an assembly of containers, as well as visuallizing the results.
