How to Evaluate the Safety of a Container

I've been intrigued by converting shipping containers to living space for several years. My overriding concern is how to evaluate the potential toxicity of a particular container.
I think I would prefer an uninsulated box, so that I can frame walls and insulate with cellulose.
I live near the Ohio river not far from Louisville, Ky and figure there are an abundance of used containers to select from.
