SERIES OF ENERGY-BILL AMENDMENTS WOULD PUSH POLICY
TOWARD ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION, NOT CLEAN ALTERNATIVES
[From Earthjustice <http://www.earthjustice.org>]
During the week of 13 June 2005, the Senate will debate its version of
the energy bill.
As currently written, the bill relies on the outdated, discredited
approach of drilling for oil, burning coal, and subsidizing expensive
and dangerous nuclear power. We need a new energy direction that
promotes renewable energy and efficiency, addresses global warming,
protects consumers and taxpayers, enhances our energy security by
reducing our dependence on oil, and safeguards natural resources.
Supporters of oil, coal, and other companies are poised to introduce
amendments to the Senate version containing many of the
anti-environmental provisions found in the House bill. The Senate must
not be allowed to further weaken air and water protections, nor to
promote reckless development in wild places in the Rocky Mountains,
Alaska, and the North American coasts.
