Stop Oil Drilling off U.S. Coasts  Progressive Portal

ON THE HEELS OF MEASURE OPENING ARCTIC REFUGE TO DRILLING,
BIG OIL'S FRIENDS IN CONGRESS SEEK ACCESS TO CONTENTAL COASTS
[From the League of Conservation Voters <http://www.lcv.org>]

On 24 Feb 2005, ProgressivePortal.org published an alert

warning that opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling
could be a prelude to new drilling off the coast of California and
Alaska. And indeed, drilling addicts have wasted no time putting U.S.
coastlines at risk.

North America's beaches and thousands of marine mammals are under threat
as the oil industry, backed by its allies in Congress, tries to
undermine the ban on drilling that has protected America's most fragile
coastlines for decades:

* The Senate is now considering legislation that could lead to oil
derricks within sight of our most beautiful beaches.

* Congress and state legislatures have recently considered moves to open
protected areas of coastal Virginia and Florida.

* The Los Angeles Times has reported that oil companies are surveying
pristine areas off the California coast. Other states could be next.

For 24 years, America's sensitive coastlines have been protected by a
moratorium on offshore drilling. U.S. national energy needs can be
addressed by investing in renewable technology and energy efficiency,
instead of sacrificing our natural heritage.

Have we forgotten the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska that decimated
wildlife and ruined a piece of our natural heritage? Or the recent spill
in the Delaware River that shocked an ecosystem? Do we really want to
take our children to beaches dotted with oil derricks?

The LCV is seeking 100,000 participants in its campaign to Congress and
big oil, "Hands off our coasts!" This issue will be before Congress in
coming weeks, and a national groundswell is needed to win.

If you think protecting our coasts and finding sustainable sources of
energy is more important than filling the pockets of oil and gas
companies, tell them to keep their hands off our coasts!
