AS JAPAN EMBARKS ON LARGES WHALING VOYAGE EVER,
GREENPEACE CONTINUES IN HOT PURSUIT
[From Greenpeace <http://www.greenpeace.org>]
A couple of Thanksgivings ago, Greenpeace Executive Director John
Passacantando shared a family recipe with the organization's members and
supporters. This year, he'd like to share a different kind of recipe.
It's one part dedication, a sprinkling of outrage, and a generous dose
of optimism swirled with creativity. It's a pinch of persistence mixed
with an ounce of courage. It's a cupful of attitude and a crisp slice of
activism. It's a generous serving of YOU, and it makes a world of
difference.
This Thanksgiving, Greenpeace is in hot pursuit of Japanese whalers who
have embarked on what threatens to be that country's largest catch ever.
Using a loophole in the international convention that prohibits
commercial whaling, the Japanese claim their hunt is for "scientific
research," yet the hundreds of whales they slaughter end up on dinner
tables at gourmet restaurants and well-off homes.
Continuing the Thanksgiving-dinner metaphor, Greenpeace's Passacantando
applauds activists who've helped his organization protect the planet
this past year: "While global warming has been cooking the planet,
you've been stirring the pot in Congress. You took a sour Apple and
served up a fresh green one [convincing Apple Computer to strengthen its
environmental policies]. You baked whale-saving cookies, and made sure
marine animals in the Bering Sea didn't starve. You've preserved tender
leafy greens in the Amazon, Congo, Alaska, and Canada. You've wiped the
counters with Kimberly Clark and drained Exxon's excuses. Thank you for
standing alongside me in the kitchen and serving up a better world."
Visit the Greenpeace Web site to help stop the whaling and speak out on
other pressing environmental concerns.
