*An Apology
The staff and Board of the National Disability Arts Forum sincerely
apologise to Ms Deborah Williams for any distress that may have been
caused by the inclusion in the Have Your Say column of Etcetera (issue
230) of a letter by Francis Rwama.
The letter raised a number of very strong reactions and comments, which
we have listened to very carefully, have acknowledged and dealt with
appropriately. All of those individuals who chose to comment have been
or will be notified of this item.
The publication of Mr Rwama's letter caused an unexpected level of worry
and stress for Ms Williams. This is extremely unfortunate and we do
sincerely regret this happening. Our aim is to try to be supportive of
all disabled arts professionals at all times
Again we do apologise to Deborah for any anxiety or distress this issue
may have caused and would like to reassure her that the publication of
Mr Rwama's' letter was in no way intended to represent the views of
Forum.

* The Way Ahead 2004 *
In the wake of The European Year of Disabled People, and with the final
stage of the access to goods and services provisions of the Disability
Discrimination Act due to come into force on 1 October 2004, how do
people really feel about inclusion and integration now?
Are the needs of disabled people being recognised and met? Or has there
been little change as yet, particularly for specific groups in society?
An exciting new project called “The Way Ahead” will ask disabled people
these questions. The project is being run by Milton Keynes art
organisation Inter-Action MK with Caroline Cardus, a disabled artist.
People with disabilities in Milton Keynes are taking part in workshops
throughout the summer. Participants are making images of their everyday
experiences of access issues by using symbols from the UK’s road signs,
as found in the highway code giving guidance and direction. It is an
opportunity to look at disability by using symbols from the UK’s road
signs, as found in the highway code giving guidance and direction issues
in a humorous way.
The design may be made into a real road sign to be included in an
exhibition being launched in Milton Keynes on 1 October 2004 to coincide
with the legislation coming into effect. The exhibition will then go on
a national tour. The aim is to raise people’s awareness of the access
needs of disabled people and the requirements of the legislation.
If you would like to be involved in this project or would like the
exhibition to come to a venue near you contact Annette Conneely at
Inter-Action MK on tel 01908 678514 or email:
<anne-@interaction.clara.co.uk>.
* International Disability Arts Festivals, Conferences and Networks *
Kaite O'Reilly, writer of 'peeling' amongst other plays, has been
awarded an Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB) Creative Fellowship
at the Drama Department of Exeter University until September 2006. The
Fellowship is for research through practice, so Kaite will continue
writing scripts exploring 'alternative dramaturgies' and the dynamic
between spoken and spatial language in performance, amongst other
things. Her title for the practical research is 'Alternative
Dramaturgies - from a Disability Perspective'. She will be making work
and collaborating with Deaf and Disabled practitioners. The first
project, a work in progress, will be this November, as part of the
Liverpool Biennial Live Art Festival/DaDaFest 2004, with Denise
Armstrong (artistic director of Common Ground Sign Dance Theatre) and
the superb visual/installation artist Alison Jones.
Kaite is finding it hard to get onto the international grapevine for
Disability Arts Festivals and conferences - despite subscribing to many
e-groups and requesting information, she usually hears of events either
a week before they occur, or a year after(!). As part of her research,
she hopes to experience as many pieces of Deaf/Disability live
performance as she can - across the globe! If anyone knows of cultural
events - festivals, conferences, journals, etc - or e-groups/networks
which would help her in her research, please let her know at
<K.O'Rei-@exeter.ac.uk> and she'll be very grateful.

Training & Workshops
******************************
* Dance Workshops in Holton Lee, Dorset *
Breath and Balance is a series of five workshop sessions devised and led
by Living Awareness director,Michael Mitchell. Each involves groups of
people with mixed abilities and will take place at Holton Lee, Dorset in
July and September 2004
The first part, Sculptured Space, is a collaboration with Sign Dance
Collective. A piece will be developed through a workshop at Holton Lee,
Poole, in July 2004. This will culminate in a performance. The second
part, Dance Discovery, is a summer camp to be held at Holton Lee in
September 2004. The remaining three parts will be taking place in
Wiltshire and Devon.
These sessions are about enjoying movement and nothing more. Anyone
taking part can take the experience as far as they wish and to any level
they like. If they can use a finger or simply blink an eye, there is an
opportunity for dance, rhythm and interaction.
Participants can also learn, if they wish, how to take their
understanding forward and share it with other people, either by working
one-to-one or in groups. In this way, Breath and Balance is creating a
fresh model for workshops, with an emerging group of dancers working
together now and into the future, offering training and direct
experience to people of all abilities.
To book a place or to get more information about Breath and Balance or
any of the workshop sessions, please contact Michael Mitchell, tel:

TV
10.00 - Star Sale - BBC1
A new series. Basically clebs put personal items up for auction and the
profits go to charity. Mhm well now, it would be probably more
impressive if so called clebs discreetly took their tat down to a car
boot sale (like normal people), got a reasonable price for it then
tripled the take from their own pocket and give that away. Far more fun
to watch punters rooting through a rack of Michael Winners old beach
towels (nasty thought) and grubby snorkelling gear than watch the guys
charitable ego get fit to burst on what sounds distinctly like another
chunk of greasy daytime TV. (s)
10.20 - What's This Channel 4 - CH4
Credit it where credit is due CH4 puts out some really good disability
