* Hidden Relics, Hidden Histories *

This summer Dada-South will be working with KCC’s Sevenoaks Kaleidoscope
project and local disabled people to create an original, inspiring
installation within the museum that places disability and the
experiences of disabled people at the heart of the re-development of the
building. Hidden Relics, Hidden Histories will form part of the
extensive consultation with disabled people being conducted by Sevenoaks
Museum, Library and Gallery.

This project will bring together sculptor Adam Reynolds and the
internationally acclaimed Sign Dance Collective to work with movement,
dance, sign, film, installation and sculpture to create a dynamic
presentation of disability arts.

Working as a group, the workshops will work with museum objects,
personal experiences and creative processes to tell the stories of
disabled people that visitors rarely encounter when visiting a museum or
an art gallery. The workshops will bring together local people and
experienced disabled artists to present their stories and become,
essentially, curators of their own lives.

The Hidden Relics workshops will be open to all local disabled people
and will take place on 12th and 13th July, 17th and 18th August and 2nd
and 3rd September in Sevenoaks Library, Museum & Gallery. Places should

A visual arts exhibition by Artists First at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery,
Honiton
Sat 10 Jul - Sat 31 Aug 2004

“Art is power. A power that has the capacity to move, broaden horizons
and break down barriers, though only on rare occasions manages to do
this all at once. Artists First, however, is willing to settle for
nothing less. The visual arts group of the nationally acclaimed disabled
artists collective Art + Power (www.artandpower.com) based at Spike
Island, Bristol, is out to touch, educate and change.

Artists First’s stunning, individual and high quality works of art speak
for themselves. The beautiful poetic images reflecting often very
personal subject matter leave a profound effect on audiences wherever
they are exhibited. Prejudices and badly informed attitudes that still
surround and limit disabled people on a daily basis are dealt with
instantly.”

Design Works! Inventive production of bespoke objects for everyday use

A new exhibition, ‘Designing for Access’, showcases six innovative
products resulting from a partnership, between Craftspace Touring, young
disabled people and leading up-and-coming professional designers, which
set out to investigate bespoke and inclusive design solutions which can
facilitate independence and address issues of access. Eleven pupils from
Plantsbrook and Victoria Secondary Schools in Birmingham worked
collaboratively with designers electric wig (Tim Denton and Johanna Van
Daalen), Jac Fennell, Noa Phillips and Robert Phillips.

The project began with the whole group visiting the new Selfridges in
Birmingham to stimulate discussion about design and existing products.
They then identified personal issues as well as aspirations for an
activity or object that would transform their experiences. A process of
creative exploration followed involving the pupils in drawing,
observing, analysing, testing and modifying. ‘James aspired to be able
to make a cup of tea for himself and others. Existing products made it
very difficult and sometimes dangerous for him. Through a process of
recording his daily life a product was specifically designed with James,
using both mass production and maker techniques. It took 2,506 cups of
tea to create a product that worked.’ Robert Phillips, Designer.

The event at Symphony Hall includes an interactive display of the
prototypes designed by the pupils and produced by designers.

Exhibits include: A 'Sod Off' Badge, Draughts Game, Tea Machine, Padded
Socks, Handbag and Magnifying Rings.
Having had the same starting point the bespoke nature of the project has
enabled individuals to go on different journeys related to their ideas
or interests and the individual ways that each designer chose approach
the research and production process. Deirdre Buckley, Education and
Community Coordinator for Craftspace Touring. The exhibition will be
showing at venues across the country during the year including the BBC
Birmingham Mailbox public space and is available to hire as a resource
to schools and community groups.

The event takes place in the Ground Floor Foyer of Symphony Hall, Broad
Street Birmingham from 12pm till 2pm on 25th June. Symphony Hall is
accessible to wheelchair users via ramps or lifts. For more information
contact Deirdre Buckley at Craftspace Touring at
