The Phoenix Fund, administered by the Small Business Service (SBS), is
putting forward GBP 1 million to fund innovative schemes leading to the
development of self-employment opportunities for people with mental
health problems.

The fund is inviting applications from organisations to run
enterprise-related projects which will provide encouragement and support
to people with mental health conditions who want to become self
employed.

* Acme Studios: The Fire Station Project Programme 3*

Acme Studios is offering 9 five year work / live residencies at low
rents and 2 two and a half-year bursaries (GBP 5,000/year + free
work/live space) at The Fire Station, Gillender Street, London E14

This is the third of Acme Studios ’ residency programmes which began in
December 1997 offering low-cost combined working and living space to
artists selected from a national submission.
The new programme, commencing April 2005,is open to applications from
practising fine artists throughout the UK who will be over 23 on the 1st

The Fire Station is accessible. Acme is offering 2 bursaries (GBP 5,000

The Disability Rights Commission lets you vote for the "best" (most
accessible) and "worst" (least accessible) service providers. (Please
note: they will only include major service providers, not your local
pub).

Let the DRC know if you want to vote for major stores or
entertainment/leisure venues which are not listed. They may then add
them to the lists and count your votes.

* Call for ‘sublime’ artwork *

Any media considered.
The Hotbath Gallery, Bath is looking for artists whose work, they feel,
explores the theme of the sublime.

What is meant by sublime? “An experience that takes us out of ourselves,
beyond the everyday and into a state of wonder? A sensual experience?
There are words used to define it, music created to capture it but how
does contemporary art respond? Can you challenge our perceptions of the
sublime?”

Artists are asked to send slides, photographs or other visual
representations of work (i.e. VHS, links to websites, JPGs etc) with
dimensions, along with a CV or other brief written notes about your work
and artistic intentions by no later than Friday 20th August to:

* Opportunity for Artists: Other Side of Blue *

The Eastbourne Mental Well-Being Group in collaboration with the Towner
Art Gallery are about to embark on a six-month project to mark National
Depression Week in April 2005.

A recent health survey of the Eastbourne area showed a third of the
population were at risk of developing depression at some stage in their
lives. The purpose of this collaboration is therefore to promote mental
well-being by carrying out targeted creative work with vulnerable groups
in Eastbourne who are at risk of developing mental health problems.

They are looking for up to three Creative Practitioners who are able to
express issues around the subject of depression and promoting self help
utilising art as a vehicle for positive mental health. They are flexible
about the choice of media and the delivery approach.

They expect to offer the successful candidate(s) between 5 and 15 days
work dependent on the number of artists selected. Target groups have
been identified as teenagers, young families and those living in
sheltered accommodation.

If you feel that you would like to be part of this project please
forward an expression of interest comprising of a short CV along with a
proposal outlining your ideas. The proposal should include method of
delivery, numbers of participants you feel comfortable working with,
ideas regarding processes, product and exhibition / display
opportunities you would use to make this project a success.

* Did You Listen? *

In 2002, a Conference for people with learning disabilities called
'Listen to me' took place in Cheshire. The focus of the Conference was
how users of Day Services thought services could be improved.

As a follow up to the 'Listen to Me' Conference, there will be another
conference called 'Did You Listen?' in December 2004. This conference
will focus on the progress made in modernising Day Services and the
success stories of service users.

Prior to the Conference, Service users from ten Day Services will have
the opportunity to work with professional artists to convey their
stories through the arts. The artwork created will be displayed and
performed at the Conference.

The organisers would like to hear from artists interested in working
with people with learning disabilities, their staff and carers, to
create new artwork in the following artforms:
Visual arts
Music
Dance
Photography

The broad themes for the artwork will be civil rights, independence,
choice and inclusion, and how these principals underpin the
opportunities offered by Day Services.

Workshops will take place during September and October 2004. All artists
will require clearance from the Criminal Records Bureau.

A project from the Council for Higher Education in Art and Design

The following Art Colleges are each offering four artists and
designer-makers the opportunity to undertake a period of research or
realise a project using their facilities, eg. studios, workshops,
lending library and lecture programme. .

• Closing dates for applications will be between 31 Aug & 20 Sept 2004
• Applicants must have at least one year’s professional practice
• Applicants should be able to work with minimal technical support
• If applying to more than one college applicants may take only one
place
• Ongoing workspace is not provided
• Access is for 100 hours to be used between Oct 2004 and April 2005
• Access is free and a materials grant of GBP 200 is available
• Artists on AA2A schemes run from 2001 to 2002 or before can reapply

* IMPACT: Creative Pathways to Employment *

A creative programme to give young people in Belfast new skills in
television production, IT, drama, fashion, journalism, digital
photography, film-making and circus skills to help them develop a career
in the creative sector.

The programme will give 135 young people the opportunity to enrol in a
choice of 7 FREE creative courses based in Belfast each year. Some of
the courses will be accredited (e.g. NVQ, OCN, Youth Achievement Award).
It starts in August 2004 and continues until June 2006.

It is aimed at ALL young people aged 12-25 living in Belfast. It
particularly welcomes young people with disabilities ( including young
deaf and hard-of-hearing people) and young people from minority ethnic
communities.

In some cases recruitment will be on a first-come first-served basis
(e.g. Belfast Community Circus School and Belfast Exposed Photography).
Some projects will require basic skills e.g. drama. Participants are
required to have a genuine interest and willing to commit to attending
the workshops.

“TWO IN ONE – BIG VOICE AND ACCENTS”

This workshop is an exploration of sound and how to adapt your voice to
a given space. You will find out how to use the ‘bigness’ and the
‘smallness’ of your voice and still be understood and heard. 
The first part of the day will focus on making the most of the Almeida
space.
The second part of the day will concentrate on how to produce different
accents and a chance to play with the diversity of your vocal range.
Participants should select a text/piece (not poetry): something short,
contemporary and learnt in advance.  A hard copy should be brought for
the workshop leader and if possible please e-mail your pieces in advance
for the interpreter.

Elspeth Morrison (M.A.) is Head of Voice at Arts Educational School of
Acting and has a healthy freelance career.  Amongst other diverse gems,
she overseas the voice work for the BBC Weather Centre and recently
chaired a conference at RADA on the inclusion of disabled students in
the drama school system.  She’s been involved with Graeae (including as
its Chair) and disability arts for a number of years and is happy to
continue the relationship.

Places are strictly limited for this professional level workshop.  The

* Royal Academy of Arts: Summer Exhibition *

Wednesday 11 August: Dedicated gallery talk with BSL interpretation

Wendy Anderson will deliver a gallery talk on the world's biggest open
contemporary art exhibition, which has been held annually since 1768.
Some 1,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and architectural
models from all over the world fill the Royal Academy galleries,
featuring renowned British and international artists, including David
Hockney, Allen Jones, Anish Kapoor, Sir Anthony Caro, Julian Opie, Sol
Le Witt, Sir Eduardo Paolozzi and the late Terry Frost. There is also a
memorial to the late Philip Powell by Paul Khoralek.

The talk will be the only BSL event for this year's Summer Exhibition.
It will be interpreted by Howard Hardiman (BSL interpreter) and hosted
by Deborah Neve (Deaf Host).
