* Voyager Princess, Glasgow: Free Tickets *

“A group of performers from across Europe have been on an inspiring
journey, which has resulted in the Voyager Princess, a tale of love,
strength, courage and friendship set against the stormy and
unpredictable ocean waves. Coordinated by Sense Scotland and played for
the first time by the Expression Unlimited Ensemble, the piece offers
moments of genuine humour and touching tenderness, charged with a highly
original soundscape.”

The Expression Unlimited Ensemble comprises 8 deafblind performers and
musicians from Scotland, Italy, Greece, Slovakia and Croatia. , The
project aims to promote access, inclusion and integration on a broad
international level.

* Tubagotchi *

Tubagotchi is an online game aimed at introducing people to endangered
species instruments.

It is based on the tamagotchi games technology but here you have to keep
your endangered species musical instrument alive by completing a series
of daily activities such as scales practice, pieces practice and
instrument maintenance.

The game gives people the chance to hear the sounds of endangered
species instruments, gain tips on maintaining an instrument and gives an
insight into what it takes to succeed when learning an instrument.

The highest scores at the end of the game are then entered into the
series of competitions to win prizes of music vouchers.

* Northern Disability Arts Forum: Project Worker + Information Worker *

The Northern Disability Arts Forum (NorDAF), based in Newcastle upon
Tyne, is the lead Disability Arts Development Agency in the North East
Region. It exists to promote the artistic and cultural equality of
disabled people in Tyne and Wear, Durham, Northumberland and the Tees
Valley, through the promotion of events and projects, training,
professional development, arts development and information.

NorDAF has recently appointed its first Director. To help us achieve our
aims at this exciting time we are seeking to employ the following staff:

- Freelance Networks Project Worker (part time 4-6 months)

To research, develop and pilot a range of Networking initiatives to
strategically support the development of Disability Arts and disabled
artists in the North East region. Experience of developing disabled

* Acme Studios: Fire Station *

Work / Live space in London for artists

Acme Studios is offering 9 five-year work/live residencies at low rents
& 2 two and a half-year bursaries (GBP 5,000 / year + free work/live
space) at The Fire Station, Gillender Street, London E14.

This is the third of Acme Studios’ residency programmes which began in
December 1997 offering low-cost combined working and living space to
artists selected from a national submission. The new programme,
commencing April 2005, is open to applications from practising fine
artists throughout the UK who will be over 23 on the 1st November 2004.

The Fire Station is accessible.
Acme is offering 2 bursaries (GBP 5,000 a year + rent free space) for a
period of 2 ˝years and wishes to attract applications from black and
ethnic minority artists and artists with disabilities as we are
currently under-represented with artists from these communities.

* Extant TC: Visually Impaired Actors *

Extant TC are seeking to cast five visually impaired male actors for
their first professional small/middle scale UK touring production
happening in Spring of 2005.

Their aim is to experiment with audience access and to present this new

18 upwards with any degree of visual impairment to audition in London at
the end of September 04 - start Jan 05.

* BBC Series Looking for Actors *

The BBC is planning a new drama series based around the adventures of a
junior wheelchair basketball team and are looking for actors. You don't
have to have previous experience of basketball or acting but you should
be between 12-18 yrs. old, sporty and have a mobility impairment that
would qualify you as a genuine w/c basketball player. Not all w/c
basketball players use a chair when not playing.

They are particularly interested in hearing from people who think they'd
be suitable for the following role:

part may be older but will have to look about 14).

* Caught Short: Focus *

10 films in 5 days in Bradford

Caught Short : Focus gives up to 30 people the chance to create and
shoot a short film over 5 days.  Writers, producers and directors will
be selected to create 10 teams, to each make a film from scratch.

Filming is in Bradford and you will have the chance to attend
masterclasses before production week during Leeds International Film
Festival (30 - 31 October).

You do not need any previous experience to apply. Screen Yorkshire are
looking for fresh fimmaking talent and ideas.

* Eyes Open 2 Art Competition *

Newcastle upon Tyne’s “Eyes Open 2” art competition will be held this
autumn, and workshops will be available during September, October,and
early November. The aim this year is to raise awareness of HIV and the
diversity of people living with HIV or AIDS. The theme is HIV and
families, as families in the UK and worldwide are all affected by HIV.

‘Families’ can include blood relatives, and also families of choice such
as friendship groups; sisterhoods & brotherhoods, wider communities and
even the world as one family. The 2004 campaign seeks to address the
public lack of understanding and misconceptions about HIV.

They are looking for art work that would address either:
- Myths and truths about HIV
- Stigma and public lack of understanding of HIV
- The idea of HIV and the family

The Worshipful Company of Information Technologists has partnered with

* Dyslexia and Disability Workshops *

CIDA (Cultural Industries Development Agency) has organised two
workshops around dyslexia and disability with Shape and Dyslexia Works
for businesses and organisations in the creative sector, such as music
and performing arts venues, galleries and museums, festivals, youth arts
organisations, graphic and web designers, trainers and business
advisers.
They will be particularly useful to front of house staff and people who
have direct contact with disabled clients, visitors and audiences, and
those working in arts marketing and promotion.

This enjoyable workshop will focus on inclusive customer care

- Dyslexia Discussed - Friday 5 November 2004 10am - 4pm
This is a practical workshop to increase your awareness of dyslexia, how

Only 18 people will be able to attend each of these workshops, which

Saturday 13th November, 1pm - 4.30pm
Elephant project workshop

Artist Naomi Kendrick will be collaborating with musician Dalia Saunders
in leading this workshop which will begin with exploring instruments
from around the world. This will be followed by creating sculptures with
a range of materials that will in them selves give off sounds. The
remainder of the workshop will be responding to sounds you make 'live',
and sounds brought in 'recorded', through two and three dimensional
experimental drawing techniques.

Participants are encouraged bring in any music that is particularly
special to them (perhaps some people play instruments and would like to
bring those too?).

A mysterious new dance double bill

High Spin’s new show, appearing at Hackney Empire on Tuesday 21st
September will be a dazzling new double bill, showcasing the company’s
versatility with highly contrasting styles.

‘ Who Dunnit?’ choreographed by Maxine Doyle, is inspired by iconic film
detectives. The mystery unfolds with High Spin’s distinctive flamboyant
and expressive style.

High Spin is a Dance Theatre Company of performers with and without
learning disabilities, which has been creating work and touring since
1993 and was one of the first companies of its kind in the world.

Equata (Disability Arts Development Agency for the South West) and
London Disability Arts Forum's Disability Film Festival have joined
together to bring a selection of films from their archive to the Exeter
Phoenix. This celebration of disability culture will also include a
panel discussion.

- Frida Kahlo's Corset
Dir. Liz Crow, UK 2000, 10 mins
A short experimental drama that follows a journey of transformation by
the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) who wore a series of
orthopaedic corsets because of impairment. The film draws on Kahlo's own
words and characteristically bold painting style. It refutes the picture
of Kahlo's life as one of tragedy and suffering.

- Little Girl who Stole the Sun
Dir. Djibril Diop Mambety Senegal / Switzerland / France 1999, 43 mins
Sili, a young teenage street kid, decides to hit the streets and sell
newspapers to make ends meet. The other newspaper boys don't like her
moving in on their territory and give her a hard time. This is an
observing piece on street life poverty.

- Mr Stoker
Dir. Lou Birks / UK 1999 / 24 mins.
One man's fight for survival and emancipation from the legacy of
institutionalisation.

- The River Winding
Dir. Ann Pugh, US 1999, 24 mins
A HTV documentary of Art and Power as they prepare to develop poetry and
paintings into animation. The second half of the programme shows the
animation in full.

Banned in the UK for 30 years and disowned by MGM, Tod Browning's cult
hit portrays a freak show in which the disabled members are the real
heroes. When a glamorous trapeze artist publicly humiliates a circus
midget, his companions seek revenge in accordance with their code:
'Offend one and you offend them all'.

- Gettin Off
Dir. Raina Haig, UK 1999, 24 mins I
n the spirit of Dogme '95, Channel 4 commissioned a series of raw, funny
and edgy films from first-time writers and directors. Gettin Off is a
tough but sensual story of a woman enjoying the newly found powers of
running her jailed lover's drug trade. However, she has to make some
drastic decisions when she gets the news of his sudden release.

* Launch of Disability Arts Cymru *

The new name for Arts Disability Wales

On Wednesday 20th October, Disability Arts Cymru will be launched at a
celebratory event in Swansea.

The event, taking place at the Grand Theatre, will include a performance
by Swansea-based master-musician Hassan Erraji, and, fresh from the
Edinburgh Fringe, comedian Laurence Clark will be performing his highly
acclaimed show "The Jim Davidson's Guide to Equality".

Disability Arts Cymru is the new name for Arts Disability Wales, an
organisation that has been successfully promoting equality for disabled
people in the arts since the early 1980's.

"Our new name signals our future direction, which is to celebrate and
develop disabled people's culture", said Maggie Hampton, Director of
Disability Arts Cymru. "We believe that disabled people - working across
all art forms - have an exciting and valuable contribution to make to
the arts in Wales."

The launch event will begin at 7pm, and the day will also include the
organisation's Annual General Meeting at 3.30pm. The event is FREE but
entrance is strictly by TICKET only. Places are limited, and tickets
must be reserved in advance.

The venue is wheelchair accessible, and sign language interpretation and
Speech-to-Text will be available. The launch event is supported by the
Baring Foundation.
