* Disability Discrimination Act Part 3 *
A VERY warm welcome to the DDA Part 3!
Now the law gets physical. Wherever a physical barrier makes it
unreasonably difficult for a disabled person to use a service then that
barrier must be addressed. Approximately two million businesses and
public sector services will have to take reasonable action to ensure
disabled people can use them
The Disability Rights Commission is reminding businesses that they
"cannot run and cannot hide".
In addition, companies employing fewer than 15 people will no longer be
exempt under the DDA.
The DDA is a civil law, and it will be up to individuals or
organisations to sue those businesses that remain inaccessible.
Everything you need to know can be found at: <http://www.drc.org.uk/>

* Advice South West *
This sounds excellent!
A new information and advice service for artists and performers is
offering home visits for people experiencing mobility problems due to
disability.
ArtsMatrix is an information and advice service for artists,
craftspeople and performers of every kind. Still in its infancy, it was
launched by Arts Council England, South West with the aim of helping
creative people to define their goals and plan their future development.
The five co-ordinators are based in Somerset, Devon, Dorset,
Gloucestershire and Bristol. They can help with queries about training,
networking, associations, business development and other resources
across all art forms. They also offers a more in-depth individual career
path assessment. Totally free of charge, this consists of up to three
one-to-one sessions during which you can explore your creative
directions. It's a chance to look back on your creative development to
date, discuss your goals and ambitions, and examine the different routes
available for taking your work forward.
ArtsMatrix is very flexible and the sessions are shaped in a way that's
responsive to your needs. Many practitioners say that the information
they receive is useful, but it's the feeling of being listened to and
supported that's most valuable. The issues they discuss are not always
work-related. Importantly, they seem to agree that the experience of
having their own space to talk about and reflect upon their practice
feels like a positive luxury.
The co-ordinator in your county can come out to meet you if you are
unable to travel to the office. Somerset co-ordinator, Jane Clothier,
says: "The important thing with ArtsMatrix is that it's available to
anyone who can benefit from it. This region is large and the travelling
distances can be time-consuming and awkward, especially if you don't
drive, or if you find travel tiring. Thankfully, ArtsMatrix was set up
with a budget for conducting our sessions in the homes of artists who
experience restricted mobility. Alternatively, you can ask to meet up in
an accessible venue that's local to you."
If you would like more information, or wish to arrange a session, please
contact your local co-ordinator. Textphones are available in every
office.

* Mad Chicks ! *
Quote: “Mad Chicks is about women psychiatric patients and survivors of
the psychiatric system, who are sick of being treated like crap and
generally sidelined.”
Mad Chicks is put together by women who work as part of Mad Pride, a
user led mental health civil rights movement in London, committed to
ending discrimination against psychiatric patients, promoting survivor
equality and celebrating Mad culture.
The perfect way to find out more about them would be to attend their
launch event, Union Chapel at London's Highbury Corner, 27th November
2004, London
“A day and evening of events exploring, raging about and improving
women's mental health. On 27 November 2004 the Union Chapel at London's
Highbury Corner will be host to an info-fair, creative workshops,
massage, debates, video, artwork, a cafe, and, in the evening, a great
gig with music, comedy, poetry, live arts and general merriment.”

* Full Circle Arts: European Year of Disabled People Legacy DVD *
Full Circle was commissioned by Arts Council England to produce a DVD
highlighting arts events and projects that received EYDP funding.
“Throughout the EYDP period we have been asking for material which would
be suitable for inclusion on a legacy DVD. We certainly had a good
response. Over 52 hours of video, dozens of photographs, brochures,
programmes and computer discs. Many thanks to all of you who were able
to send something to us. We have tried where possible to include an
excerpt from everything where the media quality was high enough. Only a
few have had to be left out.”
The DVD is fully subtitled and carries full audio description.
