* Worth 1000 Words *
This is fab! Photosymbols is a new pack of images you can use to make
your information more accessible for people with learning difficulties.
It was recommended to us by People First.
Over 1500 images are filed in 40 theme areas (including ‘arts’). They
range from everyday objects to complex emotions and social situations.
Each pack includes the images in three versions - optimised for colour
print, web, and high contrast black and white versions for designs that
will be photocopied.
Photosymbols features positive images of disabled people from
peopleLIKEme models, and users can request images they want to see.
PeopleLIKEme get 15% of all profits. They run as a co-op so they can get
paid without messing up benefits.
Funded organisations receive a partner pack for a group run by people
with learning difficulties / disabled people (HINT: we haven’t got one
yet!) when they buy a single or site licence. There’s a ‘Speaking Up’
pack for disability organisations, and: “Unfunded Self Advocacy groups
prices on application. We're happy to talk. Having supported self
advocacy groups for many years, we know money can be tight for smaller
groups. We might be able to give you a special low price or work
something else out.”

* Web Accessibility Consultancy Pilot *
How accessible is your website?
This pilot, administered by the CITI ( Creative Industries Training
Initiative) project, will offer to 60 registered beneficiaries – either
freelancers or businesses with less than 15 employees – 2 e-mail
enquiries on web accessibility per month for 3 months from 11th October
2004.
It might be us, but the information provided on the website at
<http://www.surrart.ac.uk/webconsultancy/> looks a bit ‘minimalistic’...
“In addition those registered on the project will gain access via a
password to all the questions and answers of other users (...) which
will be a very useful resource by the end of the pilot”
Aha. Anyway, if you are lucky enough to understand what all this is
about feel free to register at
<http://www.surrart.ac.uk/webconsultancy/registration.htm>.

* Twisted I Theatre Company: Cain and Abel *
... a darkly comic tale of foul moods and sibling feuds ...
Performing @ The Performance Centre, University of Leeds - Bretton Hall
Campus, West Bretton, Wakefield WF4 4LG, Saturday 16th October 2004
@7.30pm, Box Office: 0113 3439246, Tickets: GBP 4.50
and @ Jacksons Lane, London, 13+14 Oct, <jacksonslane.org.uk>
“ In an eerie house, where floorboards creak and shadows lurk in long
forgotten corners, live two strange men - brothers, bitter enemies....
Cain and Abel. Cain stalks around a house alive with mischief, inventing
ingenious ways to do away with his little brother. Poor Abel awakes each
morning to find himself reborn, unscathed. With their sinister and
overbearing mother, Eve, dabbling with creation, this squabbling
household finds itself ensnared in a fiendish and fantastical tale that
scampers and tumbles towards a startling end (...)
In a mesmerising piece that sees the buffoonery of Laurel and Hardy
dipped in the atmosphere of Poe, Cain and Abel takes a gripping look at
the darker side of family ties, sibling rivalry, the question of nature
versus nurture and human cloning.”
Twisted I combine dynamic physicality, puppetry, creative music
technology, extended vocal techniques with a set filled with trickery to
produce a textless, visual and aural storytelling theatre style to blow
your mind. Cain and Abel fluctuates between the grotesque, the comic,
the darkly atmospheric and the surreal.
