* Win Tickets for BSL Interpreted Turner Prize Talk *

Tate Britain, Wednesday 3 November, 18.30–20.00: Yinka Shonibare:
Gordon's Turner Prize Talk
BSL interpreted

The Turner Prize is the UK’s most prestigious art award and is awarded
annually to a British artist under the age of fifty.

Yinka Shonibare is a self-proclaimed 'post-cultural hybrid', growing up
between London and Lagos. From this position, he explores cultural
identity, race and authenticity through a number of media such as
photography, sculpture and installation. He is notorious for playing
with and subverting cultural stereotypes, and for identifying rich and
often complex cultural tropes such as African batik and the space race.
Sometimes he is the protagonist of his own image, toying with the
position of the modern and contemporary artist but more importantly
exploring the complex and conflicting paradigms evident in history and
politics.

At this event he will speak to the poet and playwright Bonnie Greer
about his work, part of which can been seen in the Turner Prize
2004 exhibition.

For your chance to win a pair of tickets all you need to do is send an
email to - compet-@ndaf.org -, subject <Turner>, including your name
and postal address. Please indicate if you use BSL and they can reserve
seats in a suitable position.

The winner will be the first entry arriving in the mailbox. (Offer open
to all UK residents, excluding employees of The National Disability Arts
Forum and Tate Britain. One entry per person. Prize is non-transferable.
No cash alternative)

Further information about this event and the Turner Prize can be found
at <http://www.tate.org.uk/britain/>.

* Account of Personal MS Experience *

Pat Dwyer was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2000 and has spent
the last few years researching the illness with a view to providing a
comprehensive resource for ‘fellow sufferers’ and their families. The
book also includes his own poetry on MS.

“In Ireland there appears to be a general dearth of literature written
by disabled people, especially with illnesses like Multiple Sclerosis.
This is an account of my personal experience with multiple sclerosis,
covering a comprehensive explanation of the disease itself. It is a book
written from the experience and perspective of a sufferer who has faced
this illness as realistically as I can. I have endeavoured to write it
with a sense of humour without trivialising the disease. It is a cold
look at the disease but is not defeatist or depressive. This book is a
story about an MS sufferer trying to cope with a baffling disease and
written by the same and all my efforts to get treatment in far away
places like Cuba because there was nothing available here in Ireland.

I have attempted to explain in as understandable a way as possible, the
various possible causes of the illness, the vast number of
problems/symptoms that can develop in your body when you have it, and
what to consider in deciding how to combat, treat and live with multiple
sclerosis in some small way both mentally and physically.”

The book is a now available in our online shop (look under Literature)
at <disabilityarts.biz> for GBP 10.35 plus P&p.

* Kevin Kling: the frozen moose & other stories *

Minneapolis, Minnesota playwright, actor and storyteller Kevin Kling
brings his one-man-show to tour the UK for the first time.

“Kevin was born with a congenital birth defect which left him with a
shorter left arm that has no thumb. He never let that stop him from
doing anything... Fast forward 40 plus years and Kevin is happily riding
his motorcycle in August of 2001, a car crashes into him and leaves him
with a paralysed right arm (that was his good one). After several 20
plus hour long surgeries his right arm remains paralysed... He is now
busier than ever.   "I felt death brush twice and had one full blown
conversation where we discussed my future, mostly what realm I would
occupy. We worked out a deal...”

“Kling's stories fall somewhere between David Lynch’s perversity,
Garrison Keillor's homespun humour and the mid-west quirkiness of the
Coen brother’s movie Fargo. A funny and poignant storyteller, his
childhood stories and topical observations touch upon universal human
experiences, combined with a sense of the absurd and irony.”

Kevin will be appearing as part of Xposure 2004 and DaDaFest
