* Win Tickets for Xposure 2004 *

The third Xposure Arts Festival, which runs from November 1 to 27, is
the largest festival of disabled artists and performers ever held in the
UK.

Forty-One productions including theatre, dance and visual arts,
film/video, comedy and live literature, poetry, storytelling will be
held throughout the month in six London venues, and three London based
organisations.

- At Jackson’s Lane Arts Centre, hub of the Festival, Deafinately
Theatre present Children of A Greater God, by Tomato Lichy. A
challenging response to the play Children Of A Lesser God, the play
follows the love story between a Deaf woman and a speech therapist.

- A Comedy night on Thursday 18th brings together comedy circuit
favourites Philip Patston and The Nasty Girls, and Laurence Clark’s “The
Jim Davidson Guide to Equality”, a huge hit at this year’s Edinburgh
Fringe can be seen on Tuesday 23rd.

- Actor and dancer Andrew McLay’s debut as a writer and solo performer,
Watch The Spider, is a monologue about the psychological and physical
journey of a man who prides himself on his body until a spinal injury
leaves his permanently paralysed, impotent and incontinent. The
production can be seen, at the Oval House Theatre between 3 & 13
November (not Nov 4),

- Graeae bring their national tour of Martin Sherman’s Bent to the
artsdepot on 19 & 20th and Mind The Gap perform a forum theatre
performance “Never Again” at Croydon Clocktower from the 15th to 17th
culminating in a daily audience discussion on disabled accessibility to
arts events.

- At Jackson’s Lane, Heart and Soul present “A Sense of Time” on Friday
19th and StopGap Dance Company perform a triple bill on Thursday 25th.
Other dance in the season includes Inflections, a programme of dance
curated by Corali Dance Company at Sadler’s Wells on Friday 12, a
workshop by the company on Thursday 11th, and another at Croydon
Clocktower on Wednesday 10. CandoCo take a residency at Sadler’s Wells
from 8 -13 November.

- The Albany Theatre present a one day event on Saturday 13 November, -
Albany Xposure., which showcases the multi-media work by three of its
resident campaniles, Drake Music Project, Heart and Soul and Entelechy
Arts.

- Exhibitions held in conjunctions with festival include Joy Hurkoo
presented by Siren Arts, Ali Kamalati and Gillian Street at Jackson's
Lane, work from deaf and disabled artists at the Byam Shaw School of Art
and “The Way Ahead” at the Oval House in which disabled people express
how they feel about inclusion and integration through symbols inspired
by the highway code.

- And Minnesota playwright, actor and storyteller Kevin Kling brings his
unique one-man-show, The Frozen Moose and Other Stories to the UK for
the first time.
Venturing into the eccentricities of the denizens who call America home
this funny and poignant storyteller touches upon universal human
experiences through childhood tales and topical observations, all
combined with a sense of the absurd and ironic.

Garrison Keillor's home-spun humor..." Denver Post

* DDA Court Cases *

Important cases will be heard at the Appeal Court in November.

1) Thursday 4th November 2004: Roads v Central Trains
The Appeal Court hears the Disability Rights Commissions’ appeal in
support of Keith Roads, a wheelchair user, who cannot use the
Norwich-bound platform at Thetford station in Norfolk. The case was lost
in Norwich County Court in May 2004. This is the first Goods and
Services case under the Disability Discrimination Act to be heard at the
Court of Appeal.

2) Monday 8 November 2004: Ross v Ryanair and Stansted Airport
The Appeal Court hears Ryanair’s appeal against a judgement made by
London County Court in January 2004 which found that Ryanair was
unlawful in charging disabled passenger Bob Ross GBP18 for a wheelchair.

+++ Ju Gosling v National Union of Journalists
In a reserved judgement, the Central London Employment Tribunal has
awarded disabled writer and artist Dr Ju Gosling just under GBP 8,000 in
compensation for the discrimination that she suffered at the National
Union of Journalists' annual conference in April 2000. This was the
first case to be taken under the provisions of the Disability
Discrimination Act 1995 that relate to the benefits of trade union
membership.

* Half Moon Young People's Theatre: Associate Director (Disability and
Outreach) and BSL Interpreter/Actor *

1) Half Moon Young People's Theatre is seeking to appoint an Associate
Director (Disability and Outreach)
Salary GBP 21,500

We are looking for an experienced theatre practitioner
(director/writer/theatre educationalist) to lead the company's
disability and inclusion policy across our full range of professional
and participatory activity for young people aged 0-18.

2) Half Moon is looking to cast an experienced BSL interpreter/actor
with minimum BSL Level 3 (ideally Level 4) for their forthcoming
production of Grubs, Slugs and Boogie Bugs to play: Breeze (male or
female)

The weekly pay rate will be subject to experience.

About the play: Bud likes to play - and the community garden seems a
good place to start. But who is hiding in the old shed, among the
flowerpots or inside the compost heap? Join Bud and his friends in their
magical garden, where as the winter frosts thaw, a whole new world of
unexpected opportunities begins to appear. Half Moon re-unites the
creative team behind the hugely popular Baa Moo Yellow Dog - "gloriously
technicoloured: Baa Moo makes the little ones laugh at a world full of
surprises" Time Out. With original pre-recorded music and design
inspired by the 1970s glam period - contemporised for today's audience.
This piece is aimed at 2-5 year old audiences.

Important dates: Auditions/discussions will take place during November
(exact dates to be confirmed). Rehearsals (3 weeks) will take place from
Monday 10th January 2005. Performances begin at Half Moon from Wednesday
2nd February. London based through to Easter, then touring nationally
until 8th May (possible extension) principally to venues, plus some
Surestart community spaces including weekly residencies at a number of
venues.

As with all Half Moon employment, we are particularly interested in
hearing from groups under-represented in this field, including Black,
Asian and disabled actors.

* Sound It Out: Musical Connections *

Sound It Out is a key community music provider in Birmingham and the
wider region, which provides training opportunities for local musicians
and delivers the opportunity for people of all ages to access music
making.

Their flagship project for disabled and isolated people enters its ninth
year. It is open to adult mental health service users and disabled
adults.

* Tate Modern: Training Placement For Ethnic Minority Graduates *

Tate has created a new three-month programme within the Interpretation
and Education Department designed to give ethnic minority groups the
chance to gain experience within the arts sector.

The Interpretation and Education Department at Tate Modern consists of
approximately 20 staff who work with a variety of different audiences.
As part of the placement in adult programmes, you will play a role in
supporting adult courses, general and specialist talks and discussions,
academic symposia and film programmes. You will have the opportunity to
supervise certain events and assist with research, proof reading and
artist liaison.

You will need competent office and computer skills as well as the
ability to prioritise and multi task in a busy, open plan environment.
Attention to detail and an ability to work relatively unsupervised are
important for candidates in this placement. Confidence in dealing with
members of the public, event delegates and guest speakers is also
essential.

Hours: 10:00-18:00, three days a week for four months. The placement
involves extensive weekend and evening work that will be in lieu of
weekday assistance.
They will pay a stipend of GBP 1,765 for the period of the placement.

Section 37 of the Race Relations Act 1976 applies to this placement.

* National Register of Sculptors *

The Royal British Society of Sculptors’ National Register of Sculptors
will be a comprehensive, non-selective, listing of sculptors living and
working in the UK. It will enable the RBS to give detailed information
in response to enquiries about registered sculptors working in a variety
of genres and media.

Any sculptor living and working in the UK can register.
The information will be made available to the public via an interface at
the RBS Resource Centre, 108 Old Brompton Rd. Arranged in two categories
- genre and media - the interface will be an easy way for visitors to
browse the information. Please note that sculptors themselves decide
into which category their work is placed. Contact details will not
appear on the interface but made available only on request via RBS
staff.

Sculptors will receive 6-monthly events leaflets with details of
exhibitions, lectures and debates and access to the new RBS continuing
professional development programme.
Please note that the majority of information will be sent to sculptors
via email.

In addition, private view invites to the RBS' Annual, Bursary and Bronze
casting award exhibitions will be sent to registered sculptors.

There is an annual payment of GBP 35.00 by direct debit. Subsequent

* Singing The Bridge: International Conference on Music and Diversity *

* Manchester Art Gallery: Under My Skin *

Under My Skin is a partnership between Manchester Art Gallery, Platt
Lane Art Group, Start and Benchmark, organisations that support people
with learning disabilities and mental health problems. The vibrant and
delicate textile designs in this exhibition are the work of six artists
with learning disabilities, who have worked with textile artists to
design and make a selection of clothes and accessories which express
their personal identities and celebrate their creativity.

Audio-described discussion and practical session for visually-impaired
visitors and companions on Thursday 25 November, 1.00-3.00, handling
materials and exploring techniques used in the Under My Skin exhibition.
