Kim,
I have to say when I was working on my Sport Pilot certificate I was
training in a J3 cub, that used that wire/float gauge setup. the instructor
just showed me the full length of the rod, compared to the short length when
low on fuel did it by visualizing the 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 tank levels that way.
They said when it is only showing 2" above the cap viewed thru the
windscreen it was time to be landing for fuel. Hope this sheds light on your
thoughts.
