Russ,
Well said!
I always go by TIME rather than gas gauge reading. Gas gauges can be
really inaccurate anyway, although the float type is the best, in my
opinion.
All you really need to know is when is it time to land.........
I was never able to paint or mark the wire with anything that lasted
anyway....the fuel and fumes would take off paint, or sharpie marker.
I made the wire gauge such that when it hit bottom, i.e. the bent over
part of the wire hit the top of the little tube on the top of the tank,
that I still had a LITTLE fuel left.
I figured my fuel burn to be 6-1/2 gal per hour at cruise power
setting.............so my 13 gal tank would give 2 hours.........so then
a figured 1-1/2 hours max flight time. be careful, and remember that
fuel burn goes up greatly with higher throttle settings!!!!
I always filled the tank before flying. The most I ever flew without
refueling was about 1 hour 15 minutes! but routinely only one hour
between fill ups.
The tank in the Celebrity was "triangle shaped" that is to say wide at
the top and narrow at the bottom...........this means that the float
gauge goes down very slowly at first, when the tank is full, but the
float drops faster and faster as the fuel is burned.

Kim,
I have to say when I was working on my Sport Pilot certificate I was
training in a J3 cub, that used that wire/float gauge setup. the
instructor just showed me the full length of the rod, compared to the
short length when low on fuel did it by visualizing the 3/4, 1/2, 1/4
tank levels that way. They said when it is only showing 2" above the cap
viewed thru the windscreen it was time to be landing for fuel. Hope this
sheds light on your thoughts.

Hi-
Question for you Fishnetters that opted to do a simple float gas gauge
for the tank immediately ahead of the pilot: How did you achieve any
visual measure indications, half full, three quarters, whatever? The
device is basically a piece of stiff wire coming up through a tube
soldered into the gas cap, located in a place where you can see it, but
how did anyone mark the wire for various quantities? My tech counselor
is suggesting just marking the windshield while sitting in the cockpit,
a mark for full, half, etc., the mark being on the windshied itself.
Haven't figured out if I like that idea or not, and am open to other
suggestions. Thanks for the ideas.
