RE: visible float gas gauge  Gerald Boughner

Kim,
I fly a R80 Tiger Moth and use a wire and cork float gas gauge in the
fuselage tank. Initially I filled the tank with 5 gallons of gas and
marked the wire at this level. I then bent a loop in the wire that rests
on the tube in the tank, so that when the loop is on the tube I know I
have 5 gallons left and I can either land or open the valve to the
center section tank to refill the fuselage tank. I carry 12 gallons in
the fuselage tank and 7.5 gallons in the center section tank. I also
made a dip stick that I marked for the different quantities in the fuse
tank i.e. 5 gal, 10 gal in level flight and on the ground. Work for me
at 360 hours.

Hi-
Question for you Fishnetters that opted to do a simple float gas gauge
for the tank immediately ahead of the pilot: How did you achieve any
visual measure indications, half full, three quarters, whatever? The
device is basically a piece of stiff wire coming up through a tube
soldered into the gas cap, located in a place where you can see it, but
how did anyone mark the wire for various quantities? My tech counselor
is suggesting just marking the windshield while sitting in the cockpit,
a mark for full, half, etc., the mark being on the windshied itself.
Haven't figured out if I like that idea or not, and am open to other
suggestions. Thanks for the ideas.
