Grist for the Muse #14 – November 2004
The monthly creative writing resource that gets you writing and keeps you
writing.

I'm widest awake as a writer doing something new, engaged in a process I'm
not sure I can finish, generating at the edge of my powers. Some people
bungee jump; I write.

I have no desire whatsoever to jump out of an airplane, nor one to bungee
jump. Or be a contestant on Fear Factor. These are obvious ways to get the
adrenaline flowing. But I am a coward at heart. I don’t need to test my
manhood by jumping from a plane. I don’t want to ride a motorcycle,
rollerblade, surf, or climb mountains. I don’t like to make bold risky
investments, or even play the quarter slot machines when in Las Vegas or on
a cruise. (Why waste good money?)
I get my rush without the risk of mortal harm. Getting copies of my new book
delivered that day can keep me giddily awake like a child waiting for
Christmas morning to arrive to open presents. Even though I know what is on
every single page, I can’t help but to flip through the book over and over
again in amazement over what I have accomplished.
I love being in the zone while writing. When you hit that sweet spot where
the words pour out without effort. The hours roar by, and you don’t want to
stop and break the spell. It is a sleepless energy that arrives during these
moments when I write. I wish that they were more frequent. Those few moments
of energetic connection and excitement are the reason that I slog through
the bad days, the boring, going nowhere drafts, and endless self-indulgent
crap. Writing is a constant challenge. The only thing in my life where I’ve
felt connected and always fascinated by what I can do as well as what others
do. Writing in these moments makes me feel alive and full of limitless
energy, which sometimes lasts for days. It makes me bounce out of bed in the
morning and keeps me up late into the night. No, it is not crystal meth, but
it does sound like it, doesn’t it? It is the energy of doing something new
and exciting and you don’t know where exactly it is going, but you can’t
wait to see where your mind is going to take you next. So leap of the edge,
grab a pen, and write.

Writing Exercises

1. Write about something that needs to disappear from your life, to
evaporate into mist, to leave a smoking black crater where it once stood. Be
specific about what and why.
2. Write about that one forbidden thing that you have said that you’d
never write about. Ever. Write about it and why it is forbidden.
3. Write about a family meal. This could be a true meal you have
experienced with your family, or it could be a meal that you wish you had,
or one for a fictional family. Write about the smells, tastes and sights
around the table. Write about the conversations going on around the table
and the subtext behind them.

ASK THE MUSE

I’ve just joined a writing group and we are critiquing each other’s stories.
I’m not sure how to do a critique on a manuscript. Can you point me to any
resources to help me with this?
Sometimes the best way to handle critiques of fiction is to join an
established writers’ critique group and follow their lead. Another good
thing to do is find a facilitated writers’ group where a leader (usually an
experienced writer or teacher) leads the group, establishing critique
guidelines and expectations, and teaches the participants how to create and
communicate an effective critique. Here are some additional resources I use

ABOUT THE EDITOR: Michael
Wilson has been teaching creative writing classes and facilitating writer’s
groups for over 7 years and was an award-winning Contributing Editor for The
Writer’s Block at Suite101.com. He has a BA (with Honors) in English from Ohio
University, and has been a featured guest speaker at the Thurber House, the
Maumee Valley Writer’s Conference and the Columbus Writer’s Conference. He is
also the publisher and editor of Grist for
the Muse a free monthly creative writing e-newsletter. His first
book: Flash Writing: How to Write, Revise
and Publish Stories Less Than 1000 Words Long, was published in
