Sorry about this month's late issue. I had a lot of technical problems
with the Topica distribution list (turned out to be something stupid
that I was doing), but I think I've got them straightened out now. No
more excuses for future issues. Enjoy!
Grist for the Muse #18 - March 2005
The monthly creative writing resource that gets you writing and keeps
you writing.
Be persistent. Editors change; tastes change; editorial markets
change. Too many beginning writers give up too easily.

Musings
Let me tell you a little about Sarge. He is the stray pit-bull mix that
my wife brought home after a church retreat last March. He is all
black, except for few white strands of fur on his chest, and is 50 lbs
of pure muscle. When she called, she said that there was a very
friendly, stray black dog, probably a black-lab mix, who several women
at the retreat suggested "someone" ought to bring him home. That
someone was the last person to leave, Kristen.
I knew the second I saw him that we had a problem. A good friend of mine
growing up had a pit-bull, so I knew what he was and that he certainly
wasn't a lab mix, maybe a Pit Bull mixed with a rottweiler, but mostly
pit-pull. Despite their fearsome reputation, they are very friendly and
protective of their family, but because they were bred as fighting dogs,
they are fast, strong, and above all, persistent. Persistent because the
dog that usually won the fight was the dog who didn't give up.
In Sarge, this persistence takes many forms. Snatching corn dogs off of
the table, chasing any and all cats out of the yard or under our bed
(where he barely fits), lunging at the UPS truck when it delivers a
package with the complete "I'm a vicious and out-of-control beast who
will tear your ugly brown shirt off of you if you try to deliver it"
intimidation posturing.
He is very smart. One moment he lies on the couch, seemingly asleep, so
you go to the kitchen to get the salt, only to discover with a lightning
strike, he has pulled your plate of roast beef and potatoes onto the
floor and gobbles them happily.
When we got him, the vet thought that he was about a year old, therefore
still going through his "puppy stage" and those of us who own dogs all
know that "puppy stage" is a euphemism for chewing anything within three
feet of the ground like a deranged beaver. Here are some highlights of
the things that he has destroyed this past year: 2 PetSafe invisible
fence transceivers (he ripped them off our other dogs' collars; a brand
new bike rack (attached to the back of our minivan), window frames, the
front door frame, at least a dozen stuffed animals, a pair of fuzzy
Barney and Spiderman slippers, a 9 Volt Battery, 3 dog bowls, a dog bed
specifically sewn for his crate, a carpet remnant (also specifically cut
to fit in his crate), at least 5 work gloves, 3 winter gloves, 3 boots,
the bottom rung of several of our kitchen chairs, and last, but
certainly not least, a box full of copies of Flash Writing.
A couple of weeks ago, the UPS guy delivered two boxes containing 59
copies of my book, for me to sell at my upcoming appearances and writing
workshops. Since the shipment arrived three weeks earlier than expected,
it caught Kristen by surprise. She quickly grabbed Sarge by the collar,
dragged him inside to prevent the UPS guy from having a heart attack,
brought one of the boxes inside, and left the other one on the front
porch. The phone rang, interrupting her, and as she talked, Sarge
scratched at the door. So Kristen let him out. (It is always a good idea
to let Sarge out when he scratches at the door, because if you ignore
him, he is not picky about where he takes a dump.) Anyway, about 5
minutes later, she opened the front door to see what he was up to. I
can only imagine what she thought at that moment. The cardboard box torn
to pieces, the books scattered all over the driveway and muddy walkway,
and Sarge happily shredding a copy of my book on the front porch. She
screamed, slammed down the phone and grabbed him by the collar, and
dragged him back to his crate. She then spent the next three hours
surveying the damage. Luckily only 2 of the 30 books in that box were
totally destroyed, about 5 more have some apparent mud stains and doggie
tooth marks on it, but the rest were in good condition after she wiped
each one of the off.
Luckily I was teaching a class that night and I wasn't home at the time.
I know he is just a dog and doesn't know any better, but sometimes I
believe that the dog wants one of us to have a nervous breakdown. As if
he intentionally selects the most important objects and worst possible
times to "express himself." Taking him to a pound isn't an option
because pit-bulls (again, because of their bad reputation, are
immediately euthanized) and since we took responsibility for him, we
don't want to send a perfectly healthy dog his death unless he is a
danger to others.
So with a portion of our income tax refund, Sarge is going to obedience
school. Where he'll be trained to sit, stay, lay down, not to jump on
everyone who comes in the front door, not to attack the tires of the
Post Office jeep, not to snatch chocolate cupcakes off of the counter on
our day to provide snack for the soccer team (30 minutes before game
time), not to... you get the idea.
So be persistent like a pit bull. (Y'all knew I'd get this story around
to writing at some point, right?) Sink your teeth into your writing and
shake your head furiously. Howl back at your Internal Critic. Resubmit
your query over and over again until you manage to tip over the
proverbial garbage can and get to your reward. Don't give up.

MUSE REVIEWS
The Kasey Kovars Show: http://www.kaceykowarsshow.com/
This site is dedicated to the interview of authors, and Mr. Kovars digs
into the depths of the act of creation, the writing life, and gives some
of the most insightful interviews I've ever heard with writers such as
Andre Dubus III, Lawrence Block, and Tim O'Brien. Although I haven't
listened to all of the available interviews posted on the site (yet),
but the ones that I have listened to are detailed and discuss aspects of
the writing life that you just can't quite get on author appearances on
other shows and interviews. Mr. Kovars displays a deep knowledge of the
craft and thought processes of a writer, and asks questions that draw
the writer's thoughts out of his head and from his lips, so we might all
understand the mysterious process a bit better. These interviews are
fun to listen to, and if you are fans of these authors and have read
their books, you are in for even a bigger treat.

font-family:Verdana'>A couple of weeks ago, the UPS guy delivered two boxes
containing 59 copies of my book, for me to sell at my upcoming appearances and
writing workshops. Since the shipment arrived three weeks earlier than
expected, it caught Kristen by surprise. She quickly grabbed Sarge by the
collar, dragged him inside to prevent the UPS guy from having a heart attack,
brought one of the boxes inside, and left the other one on the front
porch. The phone rang, interrupting her, and as she talked, Sarge
scratched at the door. So Kristen let him out. (It is always a good idea to let
Sarge out when he scratches at the door, because if you ignore him, he is not
picky about where he takes a dump.) Anyway, about 5 minutes later, she
opened the front door to see what he was up to. I can only imagine what
she thought at that moment. The cardboard box torn to pieces, the books
scattered all over the driveway and muddy walkway, and Sarge happily shredding
a copy of my book on the front porch. She screamed, slammed down the phone and
grabbed him by the collar, and dragged him back to his crate. She then
spent the next three hours surveying the damage. Luckily only 2 of the 30
books in that box were totally destroyed, about 5 more have some apparent mud
stains and doggie tooth marks on it, but the rest were in good condition after
she wiped each one of the off.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

font-family:Verdana'>Luckily I was teaching a class that night and I
wasn’t home at the time. I know he is just a dog and doesn’t know
any better, but sometimes I believe that the dog wants one of us to have a
nervous breakdown. As if he intentionally selects the most important objects
and worst possible times to “express himself.” Taking him to a
pound isn’t an option because pit-bulls (again, because of their bad
reputation, are immediately euthanized) and since we took responsibility for him,
we don’t want to send a perfectly healthy dog his death unless he is a
danger to others. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=bodytext><font size=2 face=Verdana><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Verdana'>So with a portion of our income tax refund, Sarge is going
to obedience school. Where he’ll be trained to sit, stay, lay down, not
to jump on everyone who comes in the front door, not to attack the tires of the
Post Office jeep, not to snatch chocolate cupcakes off of the counter on our
day to provide snack for the soccer team (30 minutes before game time), not
to… you get the idea.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

I’d get this story around to writing at some point, right?) Sink your
teeth into your writing and shake your head furiously. Howl back at your
Internal Critic. Resubmit your query over and over again until you manage to
tip over the proverbial garbage can and get to your reward. Don’t give

of authors, and Mr. Kovars digs into the depths of the act of creation, the
writing life, and gives some of the most insightful interviews I’ve ever
heard with writers such as Andre Dubus III, Lawrence Block, and Tim
O’Brien. Although I haven’t listened to all of the available
interviews posted on the site (yet), but the ones that I have listened to are
detailed and discuss aspects of the writing life that you just can’t
quite get on author appearances on other shows and interviews. Mr. Kovars
displays a deep knowledge of the craft and thought processes of a writer, and
asks questions that draw the writer’s thoughts out of his head and from
his lips, so we might all understand the mysterious process a bit better.
These interviews are fun to listen to, and if you are fans of these authors and
