Grist for the Muse #21 - June 2005
The monthly creative writing resource that gets you writing and keeps you
writing.

"Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any

good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats."

Plans Change

Sorry about this month's issue being so late. Things are always crazy in my
life, and this past May was no exception. A nasty bout of Strep Throat
waylaid 4 out of 5 of us in the Wilson household for about a week, and that
tends to throw things off schedule. Classes had to be rescheduled, the lawn
that should have gotten mowed didn't, writing projects for clients and
myself got delayed, creating a need to get them rescheduled, creating
additional chaos during the month of June. After this week, things should
settle down a bit and I will be able to catch up. Well. maybe.

As I often seem to do, I make grand plans for grandiose change, and then
something comes along that scatters the plans in my brain and sends me back
to the drawing board. Last month, I mentioned that I was starting a Blog as
I begin work on my second book, The 15-Minute Writer, I also said that I'd
have some major additions to my website coming up this month. Well, I've
done a lot of work on the website, which will be posted over the next couple
of days, but the Blog. well that is going on hold for now.

***

A couple of months ago, at lunch during one of my classes, one of my
students asked me, "Why don't you bundle up and sell your word tickets? I'd
buy them if you offered them in class." I had thought about this before,
but quickly dismissed it. Who would want this? I thought. No one gets as
much of a kick out of these tickets as I do. Besides, this is too much like
Magnetic Poetry.

She said, "No, they're not. I can dump these out at my desk and play with
them whenever I want, plus I don't need a refrigerator or filing cabinet
handy to use them."

Hmmm. This got me thinking and looking into how I could make a
labor-intensive process like creating word tickets, into something that was
inexpensive, not as labor-intensive, and fun. So how can I do this? The
thought consumed me for the past month, and pushed all other thoughts out of
my head. How do I create cheap tickets? Where does one buy plastic jars
that can be used as ticket containers? How much does it cost to print small
1" by 2" tickets? There were a lot of problems to tackle, but I did it! I
completed my first prototype kit over the weekend, and I must say it looks
pretty good. Now I need to come up with some art concepts with one of my
students (who is a graphic designer) so she can create a unique "look" for
the product. I also need to create a little instruction card to slide into
each jar, not to mention outline some marketing plans for the kit. There
will be at least 3 distinct Jumpstart Jars available initially and I want to
roll them out by July 15th, so the book is going to be on hold at least for
the summer. So stay tuned to hear about the launch of the first 3 Jumpstart
Jars!

I have added a lot of content to the Writing Exercise pages on
www.flashwriting.com, so check them out for 100's of ideas if you get stuck.
Until next month, keep on writing!
