SEMINAR SUZIES
. . . one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos;
are ye not carnal? Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos [I am of Phebe, but
who is Phebe?] . . . --1 Cor. 3:4, 5
Quit ye LIKE MEN . . . your women . . . are
commanded to be UNDER OBEDIENCE . . . if they will
learn, anything, LET THEM ASK their HUSBANDS at home . . . -- 1
Cor. 14:34,35.
We do not categorically condemn all seminars. However, in an
age of role reversal, ecumenicity, do-anything-for-filthy-lucre, an age in
which the local church and its pastor are minimized, while personalities
and man-made organizations are elevated beyond their worth; one in which
you have to put on a show in order to entertain Christians, we should
certainly question the wisdom of supporting or participating in
women-managed, fee-paid, or personality-oriented, ecumenical seminars. Such
extra-scriptural exercises contribute to the breaking down of personal and
ecclesiastical separation, to the dividing and feminizing our churches, and
they often end up in scandal as one very popular seminar circuit did.
Pastors who are not so eloquent or captivating often find themselves
opposed by "Seminar Sams" and "Seminar Suzies," who will defend their
Apollos and their Phebe to the bitter end. Such is the unwavering loyalty
that is somehow instilled in many seminar participants. The misadjusted,
scriptural admonition, "Quit ye LIKE WOMEN” is fast becoming the MISTAKEN
watchword of Christian feminists even in independent Baptist churches.
Seminar Sams/ Suzies Defend Apollos and Phebe to the Bitter End
I once visited a large independent Baptist church in Ohio
which employed a song "leader-ESS." As I watched her in her little gray
"ERA" suit lead the choir; I thought to myself, surely she is going to sit
down after she has finished usurping authority over a partially male adult
choir. To my surprise, she turned around and motioned for the congregation
to rise for the first congregational hymn! Needless to say, I was out the
door before she could finish the first stanza. Outside, I mentally
apologized to the Southern Baptist churches who were criticized by our
independent, Fundamental, Bible-Believing, premillennial, Baptist churches
and periodicals because of women preachers and deaconesses.
Liberation Versus Consecration
. . .they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to
house [and seminar to seminar]; and not only idle, but tattlers also and
busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. -- 1 Tim. 5:13.
. . .if she have brought up children, if she have lodged
strangers, if she have washed the Saint’s feet, if she hath relieved the
afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. --1 Tim. 5:10
Idleness, boredom, and the propensity to wander about and be
busybodies were problems for young widows. Today, with the advent of modern
conveniences, married women are having the same problems. It would seem
that the duties of a Christian wife in taking care of her husband,
children, and home, in addition to being a hostess, preparing food for
special meetings, tending to the nursery, training small children and
fulfilling the needs of the sick, handicapped, and elderly would occupy all
the time of most women. Yet, alas, such menial and subordinate tasks are
no longer appealing to the fairer sex. Why? Because they have heard the
FEMINIST message. "Compete!" "Excel!" "Achieve!" "Have your say!" "Be an
economic, political, and RELIGIOUS equal.”
If the woman would operate within the scriptural framework
when it comes to her duties and contributions, she, her husband, her
children, and all Christendom would have benefitted by her feminine charm,
grace, qualities, and influence. Perish the thought that Suzanna Wesley
would have been a "Seminar Suzie!”
Doing What Comes Naturally
The woman . . . she gave me of the tree, and I did
eat. --Gen. 3:12
A former pastor of mine, a wise young man, surmised that
despite how well women's seminars begin, they ultimately degenerate into
symposiums on "How to Manipulate Your Husbands." The seminar, of course, is
the forerunner of Christian Women's magazines. Several years ago, one such
magazine ran an article "For Men Only." Now, what would men be doing
reading a woman’s magazine? (Unless, of course, his wife learned all his
faults and failures from the magazine and placed the article in front of
his nose so that he could be instructed by another female who is not
supposed to teach or usurp authority over a man!)
Now, since the ability to manipulate a man is inherent in a
woman's make-up ever since "Eve" (ERA: Eve-Ruined-Adam), it seems
incredible that a man would knowingly finance a seminar trip and risk the
chance of his wife's becoming more proficient in what already comes so
naturally (manipulation) and also have his right to teach his own wife
usurped. The ability to manipulate a man is inherent in a woman's makeup.
She has to suppress that abilitynot encourage it.
Oh, but some "Seminar Suzies" teach that women are to obey
their husbands. Yes, some even teach that if your unsaved husband wants you
to go into a bar and to drink and to dance and to listen to dirty jokes,
you should do as he insists. We can imagine all kinds of horror stories
(including incest) that can result from such Bill Gothard
“chain-of-command” foolishness.
What about single women, widows, and women with unsaved
husbands? What shall they do without husbands from whom to learn? If they
have Christian fathers, they can learn from them. They can learn from their
own pastor's preaching and teaching. They can learn the non doctrinal,
moral, feminine qualities from the aged women in their own church (Titus
2:5). Actually, they are to find them a man and to marry. Then they should
bear children, guide the house, learn to love their own husbands and
children, and be keepers at home (Titus 2:4,5). Unsaved husbands are to be
won to Christ by the wife's being in subjection to them (in the Lord)
according to 1 Peter 3:1.
We Need Men
The practice of substitutmg seminars, plays, and all-night
sings for old-fashioned sin-condemning preaching and revival meetings; the
practice of women not being under obedience, not learning in SILENCE with
all subjection, NOT asking their husbands at home; the practice of women
usurping authority over and teaching the man (1 Tim. 2:11,12 and 1 Cor.
14:34-35) and the practice of men not executing (Quit ye) themselves like
men, have greatly reduced our effectiveness in reaching the rugged,
rough-and-tumble, hardened sinners of our age and has filled our churches
with a host of henpecked sissies and woosts, who are content in having the
ladies run the show. Real men will naturally gravitate to things that are
rough, tough, and masculine, not to that which is feminine and wishy-washy.
If you doubt the truth of this, go to a football, hockey, or boxing event.
A casual look around our churches will lead to the inescapable conclusion
that what we need are some men; we don't need seminar Suzies!
