The "Let-It-Alone" Theory

Comments from the Editor, Wendell Zimmerman, Baptist Bible Tribune 10/29/82
- p. 2

The world is filled with people who are adherents of the
"let-it-alone" theory. The followers of this false and illogical theory
come In all sizes, shapes, and shades. The first recorded proponent of such
an idea was a famous rabbi leave-it-alone man by the name of Gamaliel. The
beginning of this illogical idea is recorded in Acts 5:33-40, "When they
heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them.”

"Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named
Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and
commanded to put the apostles forth a little space; And said unto them, Ye
men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching
these men. For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be
somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves:
who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought
to nought. After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of taxing,
and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as
many as obeyed him, were dispersed. And now I say unto you, Refrain from
these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men,
it will come to nought: But If it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest
haply ye be found even to fight against God. And to him they agreed: and
when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that
they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go."   --Acts 5:33-40

The Word of God does not support such reasoning. The great men
of faith who spread the Gospel through New Testament days did not "let it
alone." Paul was not a "let-it-alone" man. He did not subscribe to this
negative philosophy before his conversion or after he was saved. Luther,
Knox, Wesley, Spurgeon, Moody, and Riley were not leave-it-alone men. God
never intended for His men to have such an outlook. The Bible demands
action as it declares in 1 Timothy 1:12, "Fight the good fight of faith . .
. ."

Many preachers see the false doctrine so rampant and blatant
in our day and, with a backslidden, lackadaisical attitude say, "Let it
alone." While false doctrine is let alone, the cults grow, and souls are
deceived to hell. Many good, clean-living Bible preachers see the hellish
gambling, the sex-filled TV, the drinking, the brothels, the pornography,
and say, "Let it alone."

Modernism, unbelief, and infidelity make their attacks on the
Word of God, and many carelessly say, "Let it alone." Churches compromise,
denominations apostatize, and so-called ministers say, "Let it alonedon’t
cause any waves." We need to remember the wisdom of Edmund Burke who
declared, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good
men do nothing." The preachers of the Baptist Bible Fellowship
International have never been with the "let-it-alone" group in their
attitude. We have always taken the opposite attitude, and may we continue
to do so. When apostasy appears, we must separate. When wickedness
multiplies, we must "cry aloud and spare not." When false doctrine is
spread, we must preach the Word. When compromises are presented, we must
shout, "Thus saith the Lord!"
