TONGUES SHALL CEASE!
By Herb Evans
The prophets prophesy LIES in MY name: I sent them not,
neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto
you a FALSE VISION and DIVINATION and a THING of NOUGHT, and the DECEIT of
their heart . . . --Jer. 14:14
When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the
thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath
NOT spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptously: thou shalt not be
AFRAID of him . . . --Deut. 18:22
If there arise AMONG you a prophet . . . and giveth thee a
SIGN or WONDER, And the SIGN or WONDER COME to PASS, whereof he spake unto
thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and
let us serve them; Thou shalt NOT hearken unto the words of the Prophet for
the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God .
. . --Deut. 13:1,2
Whoso boasteth himself of a FALSE GIFT is like clouds and
wind without rain . . . --Pro. 25:14
. . . try the spirits whether they are of God: because many
false prophets are gone out into the world. – 1 John 4:1
We are living in a day of COUNTERFEITS. False prophets, false
religions, and false professions abound. In the past few decades, a novel
bit of QUACKERY that has hit the religious scene is the Charismatic
Movement. The Bible contains many warnings and admonitions to protect God's
people from this sort of thing. These words well apply to the NONSENSE that
is being perpetrated among Christendom today. God's people are not
obligated to trust someone else's EXPERIENCE; they are obligated to
trust God's Word. We are given two examples of counterfeit prophets in
the Book of Deuteronomy. In the one case, the prophet’s words DO NOT come
to pass. In the other case, the prophet’s words DO come to pass. In any
case, the Bible believer is not left without instruction.
The modern Charismatic Movement even includes those that
remain in a system that venerates the goddess Mary and tongues are even
named among New Age folks and Muslims. Consider the magicians of Egypt that
duplicated Moses’ miracle and the PEEPERS and MUTTERERS of Isaiah 8:19 who
had FAMILIAR spirits. The child of God should immediately be suspicious of
any TONGUES GIFT claimants that do not obey the rules outlined in 1
Corinthians 14 or that do not speak in the kind of tongues that were spoken
on Pentecost. God said that he would speak to the Jews in other tongues (1
Cor. 14:21) and on the day of Pentecost the foreign Jews, visiting
Jerusalem, heard the word of God in the languages of their homelands (Acts
2:4,11). The rules for speaking in tongues, If we could assume the gift was
for today (which we cannot), are found in 1 Cor. 14:27-40 as follows:
The Duration of the Special Temporary Gifts
. . . whether there be prophecies, they shall FAIL; whether
there be TONGUES, they shall CEASE; whether there be KNOWLEDGE, it shall
VANISH away. For we know IN PART, and we prophesy IN PART. But when that
which is PERFECT is come, then that which is in part shall he DONE AWAY.
When I was a child, I spake as a child; but when. I became a man, I put
away childish things. For Now we see through a GLASS (mirror - James 1:23),
DARKLY; but THEN face to face: Now I know IN PART; but THEN shall I know
even as I am known. --1 Cor. 13:8-12
The modern day jibber jabber is NOT out of the mouth of the
Lord! The real gift of tongues has ceased as foretold in 1 Corinthians
13:8-12 as well as the other special gifts and signs of an apostle. The
PERFECT and COMPLETE BIBLE settled in Heaven, was about to replace the
PARTIAL knowledge and special gifts, which were to be obsoleted. The early
Christians were children in the faith and spoke as children. As the early
church looked into the unfulfilled, incomplete Old Testament Mirror (James
1:23), church truths were DARK or dim and not altogether clear nor complete
to them (most mirrors of that day were of dim quality). The completed
mirror of the Bible now allows us to have a complete, clear, face to face,
bright, distinct view of our dispensation and even Paul, who also one day
then know as he was known (his exploits being recorded in "That which is
perfect"). To believe this passage refers to the resurrection or the second
coming of Christ is to ignore a number of things.
The word, "perfect" in the Bible, conveys the idea
of "completeness," “maturity,” and "throughly furnishing" as in 2 Timothy
3:17. This is in line with the context of PARTIAL knowledge versus
COMPLETE knowledge, the childish versus the MATURE. Grow up Charismatics;
put away your childish toys! Tongues have CEASED! That which is PERFECT is
here, the perfect, complete word of God. The special supernatural knowledge
(1 Cor. 13:2, 8) was to be done away; the partial O.T. was to be completed
with the N.T..
(1.) Paul was speaking of perfect or complete knowledge coming
that was then partially in existence by the O.T. and special revealed
knowledge. The second coming of Christ was not partially in existence nor
was the resurrection, which Christ alone brings at Hi coming.
(2.) Paul spoke of "THAT" which is “to come” and not "He”
that is to come, although we suppose that a case could be made for a “that”
as being an event as well as a thing.
(3.) The New Testament Christians, before the resurrection or
the second coming of Christ, were to "be no more children," and to "Grow up
into him in all things," and to be “PERFECTED” and throughly furnished (by
that which is perfect, the Bible - 2 Tim. 3:17, 18) and also by pastors
and teachers, according to Eph. 4:11-15.
Rules for Tongue Speakers
The jibber jabber (Shan tie untie my bow tie) being uttered
today is not a real language, and you will always find one or more of the
rules of 1 Cor. 14 broken. Neither tongues, which have ceased, nor the
other special, supernatural gifts, which have vsanished away or
failed, nor the signs of an apostle are valid today.
1. It was to be done only by two or three. (1 Cor. 14:27)
2. It was not to be done by everyone at once but by course (take turns). (1
Cor. 14:27)
3. Somebody was supposed to interpret or translate (Acts 9:26 -
Tabitha/Dorcas) the words of the speaker into the language of the hearers.
-- 1 Cor. 14:27, 28)
4. Women were not to speak. (1 Cor. 14:34, 35)
5. Speakers were not to lose self control as their spirits were subject to
them. (1 Cor. 14:32)
6. There was not to be any confusion. (1 Cor. 14:33)
7. Everything was to be done decently and in order. (1 Cor. 14:40)
