Community?

I'm wondering what you folks out there think about this whole idea of a
community?
What do you want to get from this or even, is it a worthwhile enterprise
to begin with?
I've been listening to the media recently. The whole idea of online
community, blogs, diaries and the like have really taken off.
For us of course it's a far more closed affair; We share with our own
members rather than the whole world. But what a wealth of experience we
have out there. We've got 30,000 people on the Alumni and friends
database and we've now got over 1000 of them signed-up for the community
with an expectation of far more.
