NATIONAL LAKESHORE RESPONDS TO THREAT LEVEL ORANGE

The Office of Homeland Security in Washington, D.C., escalated
the nationís terrorist threat level from yellow (significant) to orange
(high).
In response to this higher threat level, a number of the law
enforcement staff at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will be sent to
other Department of the Interior locations deemed to be at high risk for
terrorist activity. The remaining staff at the national lakeshore will
not be able to adequately protect visitors to all areas of the park.
Therefore, some smaller, less accessible areas will be closed and
visitors directed to locations that can be effectively patrolled.
Effective today we will be closing, under Emergency Order,
the following two areas: the Miller Woods Trail and Heron Rookery.
These areas will be opened once again when the current threat level
subsides to yellow (significant).
Visitors to the national lakeshore will still be able to
enjoy all our other areas including the West Beach, the Dorothy Buell
Visitor Center, and the Chellberg Farm and Bailly Homestead.   Services
have not been curtailed at these areas. For more information, call the
Chief Rangerís Office at 219-926-7561, extension 301.
