FEEDING PROGRAMS OFFERED AT NATIONAL LAKESHORE

         An opportunity for visitors to help feed the farm animals will
be offered during "Feeding Time at Chellberg Farm". This program will
begin at 3:00 p.m., every Saturday and Sunday in December at the
Chellberg Farm in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
The farm is home to two horses, one goat, several chickens, pigs,
sheep, geese and cats. Visitors will assist the farmer with the animal
care, while learning of their importance to an early 20th-century farm.
Participants should park in the Bailly/Chellberg parking lot and walk
the short path to the Chellberg Farm barn.
The Bailly/Chellberg parking lot is located between highways U.S. 12
and U.S. 20 on Mineral Springs Road. For more information on this or

BEGINNING OF WINTER EXPLORED AT INDIANA DUNES


         Have you ever wondered what happens in nature in the winter
time? Join a ranger for a program entitled “Going, Going, Gone or Not!”
It will begin at 1:30 pm on Saturday, December 6. It will be held at
the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center in Indiana Dunes National
Lakeshore.
         Leaves have fallen, days are shorter, insects have vanished and
the birds have gone. Many people believe that nature falls asleep
during winter, but does it really? We will set out on the trail to see
if we can find a flower in bloom, a bird making a nest, and insects
moving about and more during this 90-minute program.
         The Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center is located on Kemil

SONGS OF THE SEASON PERFORMED AT NATIONAL LAKESHORE

         Join the “Save the Tunes Council” for songs about the winter
solstice, Christmas and Hanukah. Tonight’s tunes will showcase the
ethnic diversity of Duneland. “Songs of the Season” will be held at 7:30
p.m., Friday, December 19 at the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center
in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
         The "Save the Tunes Council" is a group of local musicians
devoted to preserving and passing on folk songs in traditional style.
Their performances typically include the use of a variety of classic or
obscure musical instruments, including the dulcimer, banjo, bagpipe,
penny whistle, and hurdy grudy. The group performs at the Visitor
Center the third Friday of each month. In addition to these monthly
performances the "Save the Tunes Council" welcomes anyone to attend
their informal practice sessions held from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. the
second Sunday of each month at the St. Francis Episcopal Church in
Chesterton.

NIGHT HIKE AT NATIONAL LAKESHORE

          How well do you see at night? Join a ranger for a program
entitled “Night Moves”. this program will begin at 7:30 pm on Friday,
December 12. Meet the ranger at the Kemil Beach Parking Lot in Indiana
Dunes National Lakeshore.
         Watch the movement of wild things active at night. Find out
how well you are adapted to the night life during this 60-minute
program. Flashlights are optional. See how your senses sharpen at
night. Bring your sense of adventure to this night excursion.
         Kemil Beach parking lot is located on East State Park Road, 1
mile north of the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center. For more

PUPPET THEATER AT INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE


          CALLING ALL KIDS! We will be holding a “Puppets in Duneland”
presentation at 11:00 a.m., Sunday, December 14. Meet at Dorothy Buell
Memorial Visitor Center at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
Come join us for a fun-filled 60-minutes of puppet madness. We’ll
begin with a short puppet show explaining animal activities in the
winter and end with a short hike explaining the tracks of common
Duneland animals.

SNOW-SHOEING ADVENTURE IN INDIANA DUNES

          If you enjoy going outside in the winter or are tired of being
in the house, come for an outdoor adventure entitled “Snow-shoeing in
Duneland”. This program will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday, December 20
at the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center in Indiana Dunes National
Lakeshore.
          Join a ranger for this exciting foot-altering experience.
Join the ranks of the elusive “Big Foot” creature or settle for the more
common cottontail rabbit. During this 90-minute program we will discuss
the interesting winter adaptations of our forest friends while traveling
cross-country on snowshoes. Snowshoes will be provided. Please call
(219) 926-7561 ext. 225 to make your reservation. A hike with the shoe
or boot of your choice will take its place in the event of too little
snow.

bird is that is at your feeder join a ranger and find out the answer to
this and many other questions during “Winter Birds, Who Are They?” This
program will begin at 7:30 pm on Friday, December 5. It will be held at
the Dorothy Buell Memorial Center in the Indiana Dunes National
Lakeshore.
         Have you looked out the window and wondered what that bird
could be doing? Why is it here in my yard? Join a ranger for this
60-minute program discussing who is out there and how to identify them.

DETECTIVE WORK AT NATIONAL LAKESHORE

          The mystery of winter survival skills will be the topic of a
program entitled “Winter Detective Work”. This program will begin at
11:00 am on Saturday, December 13 and it will be held at the Dorothy
Buell Memorial Visitor Center in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
          Do you like “Blues Clues” or mystery books? If so, come and
join a ranger for a 90-minute hike through dune country in winter.
Young and old alike will enjoy learning about our many animal neighbors
and their survival skills. Explore their habitat and search for
evidence of their winter activities. Blood, hair, feathers and tracks
are just a few of the pieces of evidence we may encounter.

SHORTEST DAY OF THE YEAR HIKE IN INDIANA DUNES

          How many people know that today is the shortest day of the
year? Join a ranger for a hike entitled “Winter Solstice Hike” and
discover what nature is doing on this, the shortest day. It will begin
at 1:00 pm on Sunday, December 21 at the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor
Center in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
         Come out to welcome a new year that starts today. Living by
the sun as nature does your year would be ending and the new one
starting today. Let us take a hike during this 90-minute program on the
shortest day of the year to look for what nature has to offer.
