May 3, 2004                          (219) 926-7561 ext. 225

Celebrate the bird life around us for International Migratory Bird
Day. On Saturday, May 8, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and the Save
the Dunes Conservation Fund present the program, “Banding Birds; Why We
Do It and How You Can Help!” at 3:00 p.m. at the Dorothy Buell Memorial
Visitor Center.
The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore provides resting and feeding
places for many species of migrating birds. Save the Dunes Conservation
Fund’s Miller Woods Bird Banding Program involves monitoring the
migrating birds during spring and fall, and the breeding birds during
the summer. The banding program is in its sixth year.
By banding the birds, scientists learn about their health and
population trends to improve our understanding of management needs and
enable better policy decisions. Join Sandra Wilmore of the Save the
Dunes Conservation Fund for a closer look at the birds in our area, the
habitats that they depend upon, and how you can help protect them!
Save the Dunes Conservation Fund is able to provide this program
through support from Chicago Wilderness, the South Bend-Elkhart Audubon
Society, the Amos W. Butler Audubon Society, Mortar Net, and individual
The Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center is located on the corner
of Kemil Road and Highway 12. For additional information contact the
national lakeshore’s information desk at 219-926-7561 ext 225 or Sandra
Wilmore at 219-879-3564 or sa-@savedunes.org.
