MEMORIES ARE MADE AT NATIONAL LAKESHORE’S
DUNELAND HARVEST FESTIVAL

Fresh cider dripping from the press, corn shocks standing in
the field, and leaves starting to turn signal the arrival of “harvest
time” to northwest Indiana. Opportunities to celebrate this special time
of year abound at the Duneland Harvest Festival. This year’s festival
will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, September 18 and
Sunday, September 19 at the Chellberg Farm and Bailly Homestead in
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
Scenes of early American harvest time unfold as horses work
the field, the steam engine wheezes and the sorghum gets “squished” in
the press. Meanwhile, musicians will be singing their hearts out, so
come enjoy some of your favorite old-time tunes.
Survey the scene atop a horse-drawn hay wagon or kick up your heels with
the “Goodtime Cloggers.” Sample some traditional food such as Swedish
potato sausage or apple fritters. The wonderful aromas emerging from
the kitchen will entice visitors to tour the Chellberg farmhouse.
Children will delight in searching for pennies in the straw, trying
old-fashioned toys or dipping their own candle.
Ride a free shuttle or stroll a short, wooded path over to the
Bailly Homestead. A wigwam and voyageur encampments lend a glimpse into
lifestyles of the fur trade era. The fur cabin will be open and decked
in animal furs and typical trade items of the early 1800s. Visitors can
also tour the grand home of the Bailly family.
The Duneland Harvest Festival is sponsored by the National
Park Service and the Friends of Indiana Dunes, Inc. The event is free;
parking is $6.00 per car and $20.00 per bus. There is a cost for food
items and a nominal fee for hayrides. Chellberg Farm and Bailly
Homestead are located on Mineral Springs Road, between highways U.S. 12
and 20, in Porter, Indiana. For more information, please call Indiana
Dunes National Lakeshore at (219) 926-7561, extension 225.
