HISTORY RELIVED AT NATIONAL LAKESHORE'S HISTORIC AREAS

Life in the settlement days of the Indiana Dunes area will be recalled
in "Open House at Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm" from 1:00 p.m. -
4:00 p.m. every Sunday in October at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
Visitors should begin their self-guided tour at the Bailly/Chellberg
Visitor Center and stroll along the wooded trails to each site.
At the Chellberg Farm, volunteer hosts in period clothing will pause
from their farmyard chores to chat with visitors. All are invited to
assist farmer Jim with the animal feeding at 4:00 p.m except Sunday,
October 31st. At the Bailly Homestead, volunteers will help visitors
visualize life in the area during the 1820s with tales about fur trader
Joseph Bailly, his family, and their Potawatomi neighbors.
          The Bailly/Chellberg parking lot is located between highways
U.S. 12 and U.S. 20 on Mineral Springs Road. For more information on

FEEDING PROGRAMS OFFERED AT NATIONAL LAKESHORE

         An opportunity for visitors to help feed the farm animals will
be offered during "Feeding Time at Chellberg Farm". This program will
begin at 4:00 p.m., every Saturday and Sunday in October except for
Sunday the 31st, at the Chellberg Farm in Indiana Dunes National
Lakeshore.
The farm is home to three horses, one goat, several chickens, pigs,
sheep, geese and cats. Visitors will assist the farmer with the animal
care, while learning of their importance to an early 20th-century farm.
Participants should park in the Bailly/Chellberg parking lot and walk
the short path to the Chellberg Farm barn.
The Bailly/Chellberg parking lot is located between highways U.S. 12

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD IN NATIONAL LAKESHORE?

         Explore the legacy of the Underground Railroad in our very own
area during "Stories of the Underground Railroad". This program will
begin at 7:30 pm, Friday, October 1st at the Dorothy Buell Memorial
Visitor Center in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
Imagine yourself stashed away in a hidden room… taking secret nighttime
journeys… hiding out amongst sand dunes! For many years before the
Civil War, the Underground Railroad ran right through northwest Indiana,
helping many African-Americans to escape the horrors of slavery. Join
us for a 60-minute interactive evening of discovery and learn about
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s connection to this inspiring,
widespread network of individuals whose courageous actions enabled so
many to gain their freedom.
The Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center is located on Kemil Road

HISTORIC HOMES VIEWED AT NATIONAL LAKESHORE

         Have you been wondering how the restoration has been going on
the World’s Fair Homes? If so join a ranger for a program entitled “Our
Precious Resources: The Century of Progress World’s Fair Homes”. This
program will begin at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 3. This program will
be held at the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center in the Indiana
Dunes National Lakeshore.
         Join Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Historic Architect Judy
Collins for a 60-minute presentation showcasing the 1933 Chicago World’s
Fair Homes. Discover the many different types of construction of some
of the “most talked-of-homes in Northwest Indiana” and witness some
restoration efforts.

NIGHT HIKE AT THE NATIONAL LAKESHORE

         Do you ever wonder what is happening in the dark? If so then
join a ranger for a program entitled “It’s a Night Hike Night”. This
program will begin at 7:30 pm on Friday, October 8. It will be held at
the Dunewood Campground Amphitheater in Indiana Dunes National
Lakeshore.
         The cool nights along with smells, and sounds of fall make this
a great night for a 90-minute hike to explore what is happening after
dark.
         The national lakeshore campground amphitheater is located 1.5
miles east of the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center on U.S. 12.
Turn right at the light on Broadway Avenue and park at the St. Ann of
the Dunes church parking lot. For more information on this or other

APPLES FEATURED IN CHELLBERG KITCHEN AT
THE NATIONAL LAKESHORE

         Making use of the prolific supply of apples on a typical early
20th-century farm will be the topic of "Apples, Apples, Apples". This
program will take place from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 3, at the
Chellberg Farmhouse of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
         Enjoy the sweet smells of the Chellberg Farm kitchen as
Volunteers apply creative early 20th-century methods to preserving and
cooking apples during this 3-hour program. As volunteers stock the
pantry shelves you may come to appreciate the time-consuming task of
preserving foods to be put on the table in winter. This program is
sponsored by the Friends of Indiana Dunes.

PRAIRIE HIKE INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE

         Are you tired of hiking the same trails all of the time? Join
a ranger for “More than Just Dunes Afternoon Hike”. It will begin at
1:00 pm on Saturday, October 2 at the Mnoké Prairie parking lot in
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
         Leaving the dunes behind, this 2-hour hike will take the
visitor to a tall grass prairie, a river flood plain and more.
Migrating birds, late blooming flowers, changing leaves and lots of
seeds will highlight this two hour walk.
         The Mnoke Prairie parking lot is located between Routes 12 and
20 on Howe Road south of the Little Calumet River. From Route 20 go
north on Mineral Springs Road to Oak Hill Road. Go West on Oak Hill
Road to Howe Road and go South. The prairie parking lot is 6/10 of a
mile south of the Oak Hill Road and Howe Road intersection.

BOG HIKES OFFERED AT INDIANA DUNES

Nature hikes through Pinhook Bog will be held at 9:00 a.m. every
Saturday in October. "Trekking the Bog” will begin at the Dorothy Buell
Memorial Visitor Center of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Because of
the bog's fragility, reservations are required for these programs.
Fourteen thousand years in the making, and a remnant of the last Ice
Age, Pinhook Bog is a rare and beautiful environment. For an hour, walk
along a floating mat of sphagnum moss and discover evergreens that lose
their needles, plants that eat insects, and rare orchids. Participants
will meet at the visitor center and caravan to the bog.
The Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center is located on Kemil Road
