The Vera Institute combines expertise in research, demonstration =
projects, and technical assistance to help leaders in government and =
civil society improve the systems people rely on for justice and safety. =
The Center on Immigration and Justice responds to the increased =
convergence of the immigration and criminal justice systems by =
developing evidence-based justice solutions for systems affecting =
immigrants and their families. Current projects in the center seek to =
increase legal access for adult and child immigrant detainees; address =
language and cultural barriers in the criminal justice system; and =
develop more accurate methods of measuring the nature and extent of =
human trafficking. The center currently works in more than 20 states =
across the country on projects primarily funded by government agencies. =
The center employs a diverse, interdisciplinary staff who work =
collaboratively across projects and with other centers, programs, and =
departments at the Institute.
responsibilities
The senior program associate will work primarily on the Unaccompanied =
Children Pro Bono Project and the Legal Orientation Program. The senior =
program associate's duties may include the following:=20
* devise, manage, and coordinate assistance to program sites in the form =
of multi-jurisdiction training conferences, on-site training programs, =
conference calls, on-line discussions, phone consultations, and other =
means as appropriate=20
* conduct site visits of programs=20
* develop and maintain relationships with project partners=20
* conduct policy and legal research=20
* draft reports on issues at the intersection of immigration and =
criminal justice=20
* coordinate development of program materials=20
* convene and facilitate focus groups and roundtable discussions=20
* prepare reports to funders=20
* assist in grant writing and program development=20
* represent the center in public speaking engagements and at =
professional meetings=20
* manage the work of project staff=20
* assist on other projects as assigned
qualifications
Candidates must possess the following:=20
* a graduate degree, preferably a JD=20
* at least four years work experience in a government, advocacy, or =
policy-related position=20
* strong writing and research skills=20
* strong facilitation skills=20
* ability to communicate effectively in Spanish=20
* a demonstrated knowledge of immigration, criminal or juvenile justice, =
child welfare, or other justice areas=20
* experience representing detained immigrants and/or children is a =
strong plus=20
* the ability to manage work on multiple projects effectively and =
efficiently=20
* a commitment to a collegial workplace=20
* Excel, PowerPoint, and other computer skills is a plus=20
* willingness to travel outside of New York City frequently
